The Role

Our network is mission critical to our goal of bringing powerful DNS, traffic management, and application delivery to our customers. 100% uptime and the best global response time possible under challenging conditions are the key metrics we strive for on our network operations team. To that end we’re looking for a network engineer who can troubleshoot, take ownership of issues and projects to achieve these goals.

You’ll be fully empowered to make decisions that affect the entire platform. You should be well versed with BGP and anycast. You should be able to troubleshoot Linux servers, packet loss, and firewall issues as they arise. A solid understanding of DNS and a modern DevOps stack is a plus. Experience analyzing and coordinating mitigation of DDoS attacks is another bonus.

We’re looking for someone who can grow with us and take on more responsibilities as the platform grows and who’s not afraid to tackle new things. Because our company and platform are scaling fast, there are plenty of daily tasks that need to be managed. You don’t need to be a developer but general knowledge/experience with tools such as git is desired. Basic scripting skills are desired. Great ability to interact with others is desired. You’ll be expected to keep abreast of new technologies to assist in their evaluation and deployment as needed.

You will:

  • Work with internal teams to provide visibility into the network’s health
  • Ownership of planned network activities
  • Serve as level 2 escalation for network issues from internal clients
  • Manage network vendor issues and service delivery
  • Work with existing teams to deliver on new projects and deployments
  • Contribute to network automation projects
  • Participate in on call rotation
  • Interface with clients both internal and external as needed
  • Work with suppliers and external vendors with minimal supervision throughout entire project lifecycle to ensure a successful delivery for all stakeholders
  • Implement/deploy new policies, features and protocols across the network
  • Manage peering deployments and contribute to related toolchain
  • Heavy collaboration with existing teams around ddos tooling and mitigation efforts

Your Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in networking
  • 2+ years of experience with Linux/Unix
  • Junos experience
  • Mid to senior level knowledge in networking
  • Multiple years of experience with a global anycast footprint is desired
  • Multiple years of experience with IS-IS and/or OSPF
  • Experience working with vendors to troubleshoot issues and provision new services
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of best practices across different industries
  • Ability to self manage and see a project through to completion
  • Familiarity with Python a plus

Nice to have:

  • Scripting experience 
  • MX, QFX experience
  • IPtables experience
  • sflow/netflow/ipfix data analysis
  • ELK stack/Grafana experience

NS1 Technology Stack:

  • Our globally distributed platform is comprised of many subsystems including:
    • Custom built DNS software that’s deployed on physical hardware and an anycasted network that spans nearly 30 facilities globally
    • REST API, and Portal
    • Deployment automation, CI/CD, unit/integration testing
    • Monitoring, metrics collection and alerting
    • Traffic load balancing, filtering, and DDoS mitigation tools
    • Messaging, persistent DB and caching systems
  • Other technologies and integrations include:
    • Linux, Ansible, Docker & other container platforms
    • BGP, BPF/IPTables, SDN, packet analysis
    • MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, SQL
    • Python (Twisted), Bash, C, C++14, React, Redux, D3
    • Hadoop/HDFS/OpenTSDB, Grafana, Bosun
    • Integrations with third party SaaS, APIs, and libraries, various Open Source projects including REST API clients and integrations
