The Data Platform group builds and operates the foundational data systems that power Modular’s business—from product telemetry to GTM analytics to cross-functional insights used by Engineering, Product, Finance, and the GTM organization. As Modular enters commercialization, the team’s mission is shifting from purely engineering support to enabling data-driven decision-making across the company.
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to own and improve the systems that make Modular’s data trustworthy, connected, and actionable. In this role, you’ll balance hands-on development with technical leadership—designing and scaling pipelines, shaping data architecture, and partnering with engineering and business stakeholders. We are looking for someone who is passionate about building reliable systems, solving ambiguous problems, and empowering others to make decisions with data.
LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. You can work out of our office in Los Altos, CA or remotely from home. To support growth and collaboration, those in earlier career stages work in a hybrid capacity at our Los Altos, CA office (minimum 2 days per week on-site) with relocation assistance provided for out-of-state candidates. Senior members have both in office or remote flexibility. Onboarding for new hires is conducted in-person in our Los Altos, CA office.
What you will do:- Own and scale Modular’s telemetry and usage data pipelines, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and reliability for billing, product analytics, and customer reporting.
- Design, build, and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines across GTM systems
- Build integrations that connect product → GTM → Finance data, enabling revenue, pipeline, and unit economics visibility.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to define instrumentation requirements for new product surfaces and customer environments.
- Evaluate and lead POCs for new data tools, such as reverse ETL (Hightouch/Census), data quality tooling, or Looker CI/CD.
- Contribute to data governance and best practices, helping scale a consistent, trusted data foundation across the company.
What you bring to the table:
- 4–6+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or Software Engineer working heavily with data systems.
- Strong experience with ETL/ELT pipelines, streaming or batch systems, and orchestration frameworks.
- Proficiency with SQL, dbt, and cloud data warehouses (BigQuery preferred).
- Experience owning and maintaining production data pipelines end-to-end.
- Comfort collaborating with engineering, product, and business teams to translate needs into data architecture.
- Ability to work independently with ambiguous requirements and drive structure in undefined problem spaces.
- Strong sense of data quality, reliability, and performance.

Helpful but not required:
- Experience with product telemetry systems, usage-based billing, or instrumentation design.
- Experience with Salesforce, Customer.io, reverse ETL tools (Hightouch/Census), or Looker.
- Experience with GTM, Sales, LTV/CAC data and analytics.
- Data observability or data quality tools.
- Startup or high-growth experience.

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $198,000 - $242,000 USD.
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in Canada, regardless of the province, is $194,000.00 - $237,000 CAD.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
