The Petal mission

At Petal, we’re using fresh thinking and cutting-edge technology to make credit honest, simple and accessible. We use machine learning to analyze more data in our credit decisions, which means more people qualify, even if they’ve never had credit before. And we use behavioral science and smart, intuitive design to offer a simple, customer-centric product that’s engineered to achieve better financial outcomes -- with straightforward terms and no fees whatsoever. The result is an exciting new approach to credit that has the potential to radically expand credit access and improve the lives of millions of consumers, shaking up a trillion dollar industry in the process.

To do this, we’re bringing together exceptional talent from across disciplines and industries to shape the future of financial services and improve the lives of our customers in a meaningful way.

At Petal, we're looking for people with kindness, positivity, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and potential will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Petal, we welcome diverse perspectives from people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions.

We are looking for an Associate Product Manager to join us in our New York office. This is a strategic role that ties together the various systems and partnerships that make our credit card program function (e.g., Card Usage, Billing & Payments). As an Associate Product Manager, you will work closely with engineering, product management, and other cross-functional teams to plan and deliver an ambitious roadmap. If you are looking to enter the Product world, this is a unique role to learn about the development lifecycle while working at the core of our credit card product.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with Product Managers to build and improve the systems that manage transaction disputes, card processing, statement generation, payment processing and credit bureau reporting.
  • Create detailed specifications that translate complex business and regulatory requirements into clear implementation details.
  • Dig into the data schemas behind our systems and outline improvements needed to handle new requirements in the near and long term.
  • Work with our Operations and Engineering teams to manage the automation of manual processes so we can create a better user experience while reducing costs.
  • Lead teams to ensure execution to committed timelines through hands-on project management of complex programs across internal and external teams.
  • Investigate and triage potential issues that arise.
  • Use data analysis and cross-functional coordination to get to the root cause and identify a path forward for resolution.

Characteristics of a successful candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or analytical discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Operations Research)
  • At least 1 year of experience in product management, product analytics or engineering role
  • Desire to dig deep and understand how a credit card processor works inside and out
  • Strong sense of ownership and systems thinking
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to easily communicate a complex project to varied audiences spanning from legal to customer support to engineering
  • Strong ability to influence and communicate cross-functionally with all levels of management
  • Proficiency with SQL and BI tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Python, R)
  • Ability to effectively operate with high energy and flexibility in a fast-paced, constantly evolving startup environment
  • Possess self-motivation to keep moving work forward even in the face of ambiguity and imperfect knowledge (avoid “analysis paralysis”)
  • Demonstrated ability to dive deep in understanding products both functionally and technically
  • Comfort reviewing API documentation and creating database schemas
  • Enjoy being a flexible, productive generalist and willing to solve problems and create delightful experience across the entire user journey
  • Strong problem solving skills for triaging ad hoc requests that come through
  • A growth mindset and desire to learn
  • Excited about fintech!

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with payments processors, networks and other financial infrastructure
  • An understanding of the software development process, and a proven track record of shipping software quickly, then iterating.

An Insider's view of Petal

What's something quirky about your company?

At Petal we celebrate our big wins with an unlikely pairing of Popeyes and Prosecco. The origin story remains a mystery — but if we accomplish something really big you can bet that delicious fried chicken and bubbles are on the horizon.

Liza

Talent, Senior Manager

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

On the Payments team, we're working to increase the speed of payments processing for our members. This way we can deliver a real-time experience, reduce the likelihood of payment reversals, and allow faster access to a member's available credit.

Rohini

Senior Product Manager II

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Petal as a Credit Ops Analyst. Since then, I’ve had the chance to learn from industry experts, contribute to other sectors of the company, and further pursue my passions. I now have the privilege of leading the department where I got my start. Petal has allowed me to zero in on my purpose and continues to advocate for my development.

Allen

Risk Ops Manager

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

Being accessible means that folks have multiple channels to engage with me & contribute ideas, give feedback, influence direction, & seek information. A few channels I use include office hours, monthly AMA's, Tech town halls, & ad-hoc check-ins. It means listening actively, assuming positive intent, asking constructive questions, & trusting others.

John

VP Engineering

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

As a PM, I work on delivering an engaging and frictionless app experience for users as they progress on their credit building journey. One of my favorite aspects of Petal’s culture is the egoless, team-first atmosphere that allows Petalians across functions ranging from Compliance to Design to make great things happen for our users together.
