Technical Program Manager
Cockroach Labs is the team behind CockroachDB, an open source, distributed SQL database. We aim to build infrastructure that keeps pace with the world, so developers can focus on what matters most: building the best products. Join us on our mission to Make Data Easy. Are you ready to aim high and build to last?
About the Role
We are looking for a passionate and highly driven individual to manage programs and initiatives within engineering. Reporting to the CTO, this person will be responsible for developing and executing engineering programs, from onboarding, to all-hands meetings (and more!). The ideal candidate will be able to understand the team’s needs and opportunities, bring together cross-functional groups to address them, and independently drive initiatives to completion. In addition to being organized and analytical, you possess the strong business judgment and communication skills needed to interact with a variety of people and job functions. You can look at the big picture and prioritize what’s most important for the engineering organization as a whole, while still rolling up your sleeves and executing on the details.
You Will
- Run and take the initiative to improve processes (e.g., resource allocation, project management) and procedures across the engineering team.
- Manage regular reporting of engineering metrics and implementing tools to gather those metrics.
- Develop and run an engineering onboarding program, partnering with people operations and engineers to ensure that our new hires are set up for success.
- Plan and execute engineering engagement events such as conferences, quarterly all-hands, ad hoc town halls, and speaker series.
- Standardize and facilitate the creation of technical documentation on our engineering platforms.
- Coordinate cross-team scheduling, such as the engineering support rotation and release management rotation.
- Serve as the point person for ad-hoc projects, as required.
The Expectations
In your first 30 days, you will assess where we are with our engineering processes and where we should be. This will include a deep-dive into our existing tools. We believe that it's important for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology and our company.
Within 60 days, you will run processes within the engineering team and identify incremental improvements to those processes. This will include scheduling, coordinating events, reporting and tracking tools, and technical documentation.
After 3 months, you'll be fully integrated into the team and begin developing a plan for engineer onboarding. You'll create repeatable policies and procedures to increase the engineering team’s effectiveness and efficiency.
You Have
- STEM or business background with 4+ years experience working with technical products (bonus points if you've worked as a technical project or program manager).
- Experience with engineering metrics and release processes.
- Motivated to think independently and to devise creative ways to continually improve our engineering organization.
- Comfort using data to identify themes, prioritize issues, and communicate key takeaways.
- Ability to work with project management and engineering reporting tools (e.g., Airtable, Jira, Github)
- Skilled at communicating and collaborating with a diverse range of people and job functions.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and requests simultaneously.
The Team
Reporting to Peter Mattis
Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer
Peter works on a bit of everything, from low-level optimization of code to refining the overall design. He was thrust into file systems early in his career at Inktomi and then learned the true meaning of scalability while working on Gmail and Colossus at Google. Before stepping into the office in the morning, he will have nursed his CrossFit addiction and dealt with the chaos of a three kid morning routine. You can set your watch by his daily departure at 4:30 pm to have dinner with his family.
