Operations Associate (Abstraction)

| Greater NYC Area

Much of the available, real-world clinical data is unstructured and stored across thousands of disconnected community clinics, medical centers and hospitals. We have a large team of abstractors - primarily nurses, tumor registrars and clinical research professionals - who help us convert unstructured data to structured data by extracting key data points from clinical documents. Abstractors work remotely via our proprietary web-based software, where they abstract data across multiple diseases according to documented policies and procedures (P&Ps).

As an Operations Associate on the Abstraction Operations team, you will work in a fast-paced environment, facing a variety of unique and challenging problems on a daily basis. The successful candidate will have a strong operational mindset, keen ability to dig into data to uncover insights, and experience working cross-functionally to drive process improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee capacity management of the abstractor workforce to execute on abstraction projects across several different project lines and ensure successful delivery on a monthly basis
  • Work cross-functionally to scope and execute project plans, communicate to the Flatiron research organization, and report out on project outcomes
  • Analyze abstraction workforce performance to help make data-driven decisions, creating new processes and developing/refining policies
  • Visualize and explain analyzed data to non-technical team members to support decision-making
  • Design, document, and implement new or improved processes and workflows to assist the abstraction team in streamlining and scaling operations
  • Help manage communications to the abstractor workforce to promote increased utilization and drive engagement

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 2-3 years in an operations or tactical role
  • Strong SQL and Excel skills
  • Ability to analyze data and create visualizations in business intelligence software (e.g., Dora, Tableau, Lookr, etc)
  • Ease with learning new software systems/tools
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Passionate about healthcare and the fight against cancer

An Insider's view of Flatiron Health

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

An engineer and oncologist work together over several weeks to build an algorithm from a naive prototype to a highly specialized and flexible rule set that can accurately represent the lines of therapy for 95% of patients within a specific disease subset.

Abhishek

Software Engineer

How does the company support your career growth?

As engineering manager, I am invested in the professional development of the people I work with. I train team members by pulling them out of their comfort zones to the uncomfortable territory. At Flatiron, it is one of our values - greatness and comfort rarely co-exist.

Kevin

Software Engineer

What is your vision for the company?

At Flatiron, we believe that learning from the experience of every cancer patient is an imperative — it is the key to accelerating research and continuing to improve the quality of care. Our mission is to serve cancer patients and our customers by dramatically improving treatment and accelerating research.

Zach Weinberg

Co-Founder, President and COO

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

Instead of studying the cells, I now have the opportunity to write about the patients. I can tell their stories through the research lens and enable them to advance clinical cancer research through their experiences. I certainly never lose sight of the human behind the cell anymore.
