Head of Business Development
We're looking for a Head of Business Development to help us accomplish our mission to improve lives by learning from the experience of every cancer patient. Here's what you need to know about the role and our team.
What You'll Do
The Business Development (BD) team is responsible for identifying and driving key business opportunities at Flatiron through strategic partnerships and M&A. Some examples of our work include bringing new products to market with a partner (e.g., developing a joint clinico-genomic data product with Foundation Medicine), launching new companies (e.g., OneOncology), and incubating new offerings to accelerate our impact on cancer care.
In this role, you’ll lead and manage a high performing BD team, serving as a “player-coach” as you’ll be responsible for both owning complex transactions as well as developing the broader team. We’re looking for individuals that are both experienced deal-makers as well as strong people and company leaders. Working in a fast-paced and rapidly growing business, you will be consistently challenged and are expected to learn quickly and think “yes before no” as you’ll play an integral role in the success and growth of Flatiron.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Coach and manage a team focused on sourcing and executing strategic partnerships and M&A opportunities
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders across the company to proactively identify and prioritize partnering opportunities for Flatiron’s business
- Own all aspects of deal execution, including identification and prioritization of partners/targets, strategic and financial assessment, transaction structuring and negotiation, operations planning, follow through to results, and relationship management
- Implement best practices to sustain a high performing BD team (e.g., landscaping, deal pipelines, transaction playbooks)
- Cultivate relationship with companies across the space, keeping a finger on the pulse of competitor offerings and broader market dynamics
Who You Are
You're a highly analytic, strategic thinker with the ability to translate between strategic business decisions and their product and operational implications. You have 10+ years experience in externally-facing roles within partnering or corporate development at a high-growth healthcare company. You're excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You’re a kind, passionate and collaborative people manager and problem-solver who values feedback and developing a diverse team.
In addition, you:
- Have led high performing teams
- Have extensive experience structuring negotiating, and executing strategic partnerships, M&A, and/or investments
- Are able to cultivate and strengthen relationships internally and externally across a matrix of roles and areas of expertise
- Can navigate organizational cultures and teams at both Flatiron and partners
- Have a nose for value and can effectively focus and prioritize in a challenging, rapidly changing, and time sensitive environment
- Able to effectively communicate information succinctly to executive stakeholders
