At Knewton, knowing our users is critical to validating product decisions through both capturing early signal before we build, as well as refining and enhancing existing features. We are relentlessly focused on our user’s needs to help us deliver highly effective and intuitive personalized learning tools, and clear actionable tools and metrics for Instructors.

In this new role, you will create understanding and empathy around user needs, stated and unstated, for your entire product team including designers, product managers, salespeople, data scientists and engineers. You will do so by conducting primary research, exploring the behaviors and motivations of our users through methods like focus groups, user interviews, surveys, usability testing, metrics and log analysis.

Your research will help us create utility, usability, and delight in our product and features for higher education. You’ll inspire change at all stages of product development by delivering compelling, written, in-person and visual presentations on your findings. You will use our metrics data to uncover research opportunities, and use research findings to contextualize the data we collect.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research on multiple aspects of our product and experiences
  • Collect and analyze user behavior through focus group, 1:1 sessions, lab studies, field visits, surveys, benchmark studies, server logs, and online experiments (A/B testing)
  • Work with Designers, Product Managers, Data Scientists, Sales and Support teams to prioritize research opportunities in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Develop a repeatable, scalable UX research methodology, and synthesize the findings for Knewton teams to use together, in different ways toward a common goal
  • Understand and incorporate complex technical and business requirements into research
  • Advocate research findings to diverse audiences through written reports and in-person presentations

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Anthropology, Human Factors, Psychology, HCI/Computer Science or other related fields or equivalent practical experience
  • 4+ years of work experience
  • Experience conducting semi-structured interviews, contextual field visits, usability studies either live or remote (e.g. Userzoom or usertesting.com)
  • Experience integrating user research into product designs and design practices
  • Experience in survey design (ie: Qualtrics).
  • Working knowledge of statistics and experimental design
  • Strong understanding of the strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during the product development process
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation and collaboration skills
  • 2-5 years of experience in the North American Higher Education market
