Software Engineering Manager

| New York

Are you energized by leading extraordinary software engineers while remaining hands-on with coding and technical architecture? As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a software engineering team in building products while maintaining a high quality bar with scalable and reusable technology. You will be mentoring, coaching and inspiring software engineers on the team to take on new technical challenges and grow their careers. You will lead the team in looking at problems in new ways and inventing simple solutions to complex problems.

Flatiron Health’s engineering team builds and runs an electronic health record system that powers all of the patient care in over 270 oncology clinics, data processing pipelines, algorithmic, AI and human-operated data curation tools, and customer-facing data analytics and visualization products. We implement elegant treatment management products and systems that clean, structure and understand clinical patient-level data as we develop the largest, most comprehensive set of oncology data intelligence. We scale pipelines and services to handle the world's oncology data with creative engineering solutions to open-ended oncology data problems.

We are looking for exceptional Software Engineering Managers who are experienced people managers, developers, and leaders with vision.

As a software engineering manager, you will:

  • Join one of our cross-functional development teams and contribute hands-on to our products and infrastructure.
  • Act as player-coach and champion engineering standards.
  • Develop and mentor engineering and leadership talent.
  • Lead technical planning.
  • Contribute to strategic and tactical product planning.
  • Be responsible for the delivery and operation of high-quality software that helps Flatiron to grow.

About you:

  • You have a track record of leading high performing teams that successfully deliver scalable products in an agile technology company or a startup.
  • You have strong hands-on technical skills and can contribute to coding and architecture.
  • You are recognized as a leader and authority by your peers.
  • You recognize that the success of an engineering team comes from its engineers, and you are passionate about coaching, mentorship, and career development.
  • You keep abreast of broad technical change across the industry.
  • You recognize the value of performance, reliability, and scalability of systems.
  • You regularly anticipate technical issues and make architectural and design decisions to avoid them.

Insider's spotlight

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The most exciting part of being in my company is solving a real problem at scale through serious collaboration. Oncologists, software engineers, statisticians, business folks, etc. all have to come to the table together, as equals, to figure this one out. And we are doing it.

Amy

Chief medical Officer

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

An engineer and oncologist work together over several weeks to build an algorithm from a naive prototype to a highly specialized and flexible rule set that can accurately represent the lines of therapy for 95% of patients within a specific disease subset.

Abhishek

Software Engineer

How does the company support your career growth?

As engineering manager, I am invested in the professional development of the people I work with. I train team members by pulling them out of their comfort zones to the uncomfortable territory. At Flatiron, it is one of our values - greatness and comfort rarely co-exist.

Kevin

Software Engineering

At Flatiron, we believe that learning from the experience of every cancer patient is an imperative — it is the key to accelerating research and continuing to improve the quality of care. Our mission is to serve cancer patients and our customers by dramatically improving treatment and accelerating research.

Zach Weinberg

Co-Founder, President and COO

Instead of studying the cells, I now have the opportunity to write about the patients. I can tell their stories through the research lens and enable them to advance clinical cancer research through their experiences. I certainly never lose sight of the human behind the cell anymore.

Rana

Medical Writer
