The average salary for a web designer in New York is $76,197, according to the latest data from CyberCoders, a leading national recruiting firm in the U.S.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't have data for web designer job growth specifically, it is predicting web developer jobs to grow 27% from 2014 to 2024.

That is an important statistic to consider because web developers and designers usually work very closely with one another.

At any given time, the Built In NYC job board has numerous openings for designers or UX specialists.

What kind of skills does a web designer need?

Web designers create the visual elements of a website and must have a strong understanding of graphic design.

The designer will generally be responsible for the following:

  • Wireframes and layouts
  • Graphic design of logos and other visual branding
  • Template design that maintains visual integrity while also scaling correctly across multiple devices
  • Creating an aesthetically pleasing user experience that also accomplishes the goals of the website

While not every web designer is required to know how to code, it is helpful to have a basic understanding as the designer will work closely with developers in translating their aesthetic vision to the web.
