Finding a tutor in NYC is now as easy as booking a flight

Finding a good tutor can be significantly harder than figuring out the material you’re struggling with.

If you’re lucky, your university will have a recommendation, but that's not always the case. More likely, you’re left asking around or scouring the campus’ bulletin boards. When you have finally found someone you think may be a fit, you then have to go through the arduous task of scheduling appointments and vetting. I'm not saying this is the only reason why I failed calculus, but it’s viable excuse.

is aiming to change all that.

“There is a pain point right now in connecting quality tutors with students,” Scott Lee, Founder and CEO at Gooroo said. “With GooRoo, in just a few clicks you can connect with a very qualified tutor instantly.”

GooRoo is kind of like a more verified version of Uber; just instead of connecting drivers with people who need a ride, they connect students with qualified tutors. If you’re a student in need — and that ranges from an 8-year-old who needs help with addition, all the way to the Columbia student studying astrophysics — Gooroo can set you up with a qualified tutor almost instantly.

Through the company’s app, you can not only find a tutor, but also do things like chat, pay and even find a previously vetted spot to study. While learning astrophysics is never cheap, you can have a tutor attending an ivy league school help you through the finer points for between $40 and $60 an hour. If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that it’s about half what you’d pay to have someone give you a massage, and far less than you’d be out if you were to fail your final exam and have to retake the course.

At the moment the service is limited to New York City, and only supports tutors for academic subjects. As Gooroo continues to build, they plan to add college prep tutoring in the summer, and then spread into the world of music by fall. Someday, in the not too distant future, they hope to be the hub of all things you may need help with, be it skateboarding, yoga, swimming, singing or golf.
