Description

This is an official event of NYC Open Data Week!

ABOUT

We’ve read the IPCC climate change report and the National Climate Assessment, and the message is clear: we must do something now to address climate change and its impacts. The day long LYLAS Labs Hackathon on Environmental Justice will bring together citizens of NYC, its business community, and its open data in order to develop solutions to advance environmental protections and preventive measures for the city of New York. Only, this isn’t your average hackathon, in fact, LYLAS Labs is tackling issues differently by fostering collaboration across industries in order to bring new ideas and diverse perspectives to the issues that matter most. That’s why LYLAS Labs is dedicated to connecting participants outside of tech and industry partners outside of environmental justice to not only drive meaningful and lasting community but also create spaces for social good.

FOR PARTICIPANTS

As a participant, you'll be committing your day to developing solutions surrounding environmental justice. You'll be placed on a team a week before the event led by a technical expert from the Flatiron School. There are no skills or expertise required from you, just a passion for the issue.

You will also be provided a starter pack prior to the event to understand the material, get to know your team, and the sponsors. Throughout the day, teams will "hack" the issues as well as have access to subject matter experts at the event and opportunities to pressure test the real world applicability of their ideas with external experts . You must bring your own computer.

All participants will receive a Swag Bag filled with goodies from our sponsors and hosts as well as catered breakfast, lunch, dinner (and caffeine) to keep you energized and fueled through-out the day. All meals will be vegetarian friendly, we promise! Additionally a cash prize will be awarded to the winning team, judged by your peers, subject matter experts and sponsors.

About NYC Open Data Week

We are an official organizer of NYC Open Data Week! NYC Open Data is the City’s free public data program - providing access to more than 2,000 datasets published by various City agencies. Open Data Week is organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Program and BetaNYC. This week long event series takes place annually during the first week of March to celebrate New York City’s Open Data Law, which was signed into law on March 7, 2012, and International Open Data Day which is typically the first Saturday in March. Open Data Week acts as a week-long festival in different locations across NYC (and virtually!) bringing together various communities to have discussions, demos, trainings or other engagements to raise awareness about NYC Open Data as a free resource.
