Wayward Wild, a first-of-its-kind media incubator, launches in NYC

The incubator model is a tried-and-true method for launching a startup, proven in Silicon Valley and beyond time and time again. This is largely due to the fact that incubators reside on the front lines of startup territory, and commonly provide the resources for early-stage startups on the cutting edge of new technologies.

In New York City, incubators and accelerators abound, and are often hyperfocused on specific sectors within the tech industry, from education to real estate to fashion. Today, Wayward Wild, a new incubator, officially launched in New York City on a mission to foster the next generation of media startups — with a twist.

While many traditional incubators have been specifically focused on high-tech brands, Wayward Wild’s approach caters to digital content creators, whether they're online publications, podcasts or web series. Among its resources, this incubator offers a full-service content studio for written and visual storytelling, along with in-house technology and advertising services for brands.

At its core, Wayward Wild plans to work alongside content creators to build media businesses from the ground up. The company also functions as a startup studio, and will make seed investments in its member companies as part of its program.

The company was founded by Brad Smith, a seasoned founder who previously sold his design startup Virb to GoDaddy in 2013. Smith’s goal is to marry principles in technology and content, connecting top designers, writers and filmmakers to multi-platform experiences.

“Our vision is to reimagine the traditional media house by giving specialty content makers the just- out-of-reach resources and knowledge they need to create thriving independent businesses,” said Smith.

Wayward Wild also announced a number of its inaugural members today, including content brand Posture, a digital and print magazine that explore identity, And North, a curated travel guide, and photography site, The Photographic Journal. Four new members will be announced throughout the fall.
