State of New York awards Galvanize $1.3M to set up shop in NYC

Galvanize, the bootcamp and coworking startup that grew out of Colorado, is coming to New York City.

On Monday, the tech-education company announced it received a $1.3M grant from New York State, which will be used to support Galvanize’s East Coast expansion.

Galvanize was founded by Jim Deters, Chris Onan and Lawrence Mandes in 2012, and offers technical training in web development and data science across its existing six campuses.

“Our core mission is to give anyone who has the aptitude and ability for the rigors of our program, access to the latest in tech education and to the network of support they will need to acquire a fulfilling job in the twenty first century economy,” said Galvanize CEO Jim Deters in a statement. “Our mission is in harmony with the State and City’s commitment to create opportunities for upward mobility. We are grateful to Governor Cuomo and the Empire State Development board. We see this grant as not only an investment in Galvanize, but also in the future of New York. We look forward to being a partner with the City and the State in building that future.”

Galvanize will use the funding to renovate a 55,000-square-foot space in New York City, which will feature workshops, a co-working space for tech startups and immersive tech-education training programs.

Galvanize was chosen for the grant as it will help advance the City’s Opportunity Agenda, which is a regionally specific strategic economic development plan to foster opportunities for the region’s population living below the federal poverty level through workforce development. The company plans to open its inaugural New York City location in 2017, where upon approval from the State, it will train students for careers in tech.

A large part of Galvanize’s success to date has been the high percentage of job placement rates its graduates experience. Galvanize Web Development Immersive grads have a 91 percent job placement rate and $77,000 average starting salary. Galvanize Data Science grads have a 92 percent job placement rate and $111,000 average starting salary.
