Updater is one of the fastest growing tech companies in NYC, having raised over $50 million with plans to more than double the size of its team this year. We’ve built a web app that streamlines the (often dreaded!) moving process for the 17 million households who move each year in America.

Updater’s marketing team has gained a lot of momentum this past year, so we’re ready for our first in-house communications hire. Our Communications Manager will identify, develop and execute communications plans and tactics in support of Updater’s mission and goals. The position will work closely with our Marketing Director and Founder/CEO to manage communications with the media and external partners, thoughtfully developing pitch ideas and weaving related content into the overall external picture of Updater’s business. Strategic storytelling and digital engagement should be at the center of our communications capabilities, and we’ll turn to you (the expert!) to help us get there.

It’s our job to help educate stakeholders – from reporters to opinion leaders to employees – about the benefits of Updater’s products, our unique culture and beliefs, and our approach to solving the relocation industry’s largest issues. We move quickly, have very high standards, and nearly unlimited opportunities ahead of us. This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced, entrepreneurial communications professional.

What you’ll do:

• Secure media coverage for our various initiatives, both nationally, locally in NYC, and in markets where our partners exist
• Serve as the media relations lead for both outbound and inbound public relations initiatives, including:
• Identify and foster key relationships media partners, including reporters, producers, editors, influencers, and more
• Proactively pitch stories
• Coordinate all media inquiries
• Update media lists, news release pipeline and distribution calendar
• Secure placement on various awards lists
• Develop and execute on thought leadership opportunities including pitches, bylines, trendspotting, conferences, and more
• Deepen both external and internal stakeholder narratives and messaging
• Lead the creation of content and collateral for external media relations, including press releases, blog posts, talking points, media kits, FAQs, and more

What you have:

• 5+ years of relevant work experience
• BA/BS degree or equivalent
• Proven experience pitching and placing stories with the news media
• Exceptional oral and written communicator, who can communicate effectively and maintain good judgment in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to influence others to achieve understanding, acceptance
