Headquartered in New York, Common was founded by General Assembly co-founder Brad Hargreaves in early 2015.
Common partners with real estate owners and developers throughout the US to create community-minded homes. By doing this, we’re addressing the fundamental supply and demand issues that underlie housing in major cities today. Common opened its doors to its first building in Brooklyn in October 2015.
About the Role
We are looking for an inspired designer and creative problem solver. Our Director of Architecture must have a passion for residential architecture and the way people live.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the right designer. As Common’s Director of Architecture you will lead world class design studies, produce and direct innovative conceptual and detailed design work, and have a meaningful impact not only on the future of Common, but also on the residential market. As our lead Architect, you must have a background in US residential design and be confident working in multiple bureaucracies.
Common’s Director of Architecture must have a talent for seeing creative solutions quickly. The role will be suited for a candidate who is able to produce and present concepts on short timelines and be an expert prioritizer. This is a partner facing role and will involve working with many members or our team. As such, the right candidate will be an excellent communicator.
It will be critical for this person to be analytical and able to understand the science of Architecture. Some background in Real Estate Development is ideal.
As a director level team member, you will have the experience and ability to define your own objectives and deliver results in line with the overall goals. Your work and leadership will enhance the experience of our members and deliver on our overall mission, of providing convenience and community to the way people live. We expect our Director of Architecture to have a positive influence on our overall product and brand and to be a thought leader. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to step into a critical role for an exciting start up.
- You have a qualification in Architecture and at least 5 years experience.
- You are a top class designer with a background in residential design.
- You have some experience and understanding of property development.
- Architectural Registration will be highly regarded but not required.
- You have some experience leading a team.
- You are an excellent communicator.
- You see solutions quickly and are able to produce work on short timelines.
- You know how to ask for help when you need it.
