Senior Counsel / General Counsel 

Summary

We’re looking for a Senior Counsel or General Counsel to be the first member of our in house legal team at our headquarters in New York! This person will be responsible for a variety of legal matters, including drafting and negotiating contracts, managing our IP portfolio, advising business clients on various day-to-day questions including around international expansion, and performing research on applicable laws and regulations. Our ideal candidate is comfortable working on dozens of assignments at the same time and will be able to provide practical, concise, plain-English advice to each department at Away.

The ideal candidate has 5-10 years of post-law school legal experience. This role is based in our Noho, NYC headquarters and reports to the Co-Founder and CEO.

Some of what you’ll do:

• Review, draft, and negotiate a wide variety of contracts (think: technology vendors, business development deals, supply chain agreements, real estate contracts)
• Counsel colleagues on a host of legal questions, including around marketing, customers, employees, international expansion, and more
• Manage Away’s IP portfolio
• Internally lead guidance on Away’s expansion into new countries, including those in Europe
• Be the internal lead on dispute resolution
• Create and implement company policies
• Develop from scratch all legal department processes including a contract management system
• Manage external counsel

Who you are:

• An attorney with a JD, admission to a state bar, and 5-10 years of relevant experience, either in-house or at a top-firm (bonus for some of each!)
• Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements
• Confident in handling tasks and answering questions that you’ve never faced
• Able to assess both legal and business risks
• Skillful drafter and issue-spotter; organized and detail-oriented; and a clear communicator
• Collaborative, friendly, flexible, and eager to learn about all facets of the business
• Any of the following is extra credit: experience representing technology and/or emerging growth companies; experience in trademark, patent, consumer protection, employment, international, and/or real estate law
• Impeccable attention to detail
• Able to communicate clearly and seamlessly with a wide array of internal and external stakeholders
• Strategic thinker with the ability to execute and build scalable processes and systems
• Love to travel (but that's a given)
