What's on tap: 3 local startups offering employees more than just coffee and water

Gone are the days of offering employees a bland choice of water or coffee when they get to the office. It’s 2017, and NYC startups are stepping up their beverage game to keep their team hydrated and happy — think Kombucha, Frozé and lots of beer. Here’s what else they’re serving employees.

SeatGeek is an event ticket marketplace that helps connect you to your favorite sporting events, concerts and shows. Abby Fink, a recruiter with the company, shares what goes on behind the scenes — and in employees’ cups.

What’s on tap at your office?

SeatGeek has the regular fare of beer and cold brew on tap. I think we're spoiled because we get two options of each. However, our true claim to fame is our Kombucha and iced tea.

What’s your favorite?

It's a tie between the beer and the kombucha. Kombucha is great during the day, and the beer on tap covers post-work hangouts in the office. The team favorite might be the cold brew, since we run out of it most often...and when we do, it isn’t pretty.

What’s on your wish list for future drinks on tap?

Personally, negronis are my favorite drink so the real dream would be to have a nitro negroni, but I understand that may be a stretch. From a team perspective, I know that chocolate milk would be the holy grail.

Foursquare is the location intelligence company that helps people find the perfect places to go with friends. Employees are always well-hydrated thanks to Zack Sheppard, Foursquare’s Swarm Mobile App Lead and Company Kegmaster — i.e., the guy who determines what’s on rotation.

What’s on tap at your office?

At Foursquare, we have soda, cold brew, wine and beer on tap. The beer and wine are rotated to match the weather — right now since it’s been so hot, we have a French rosé wine and Bell’s Oberon. We also have a full cocktail bar and a brand new frozen drink maker.

What’s your favorite?

I’m most excited about the frozen drink maker right now. It’s going to open up a whole range of new recipes for us to try. Our first Frozé Day was a huge success, and next up are frozen margaritas and penichillins!

What’s on your wish list for future drinks on tap?

I would love to get a second tap for beer. With only one keg at a time, it’s impossible to please everyone. We’d be able to please a broader spectrum of drinkers, like an IPA and a Belgian wheat, or a pilsner and a stout.

2U partners with top universities like NYU, UNC and UC Berkeley to power their digital education programs. Arthur Jordan, VP of Engineering, told us what’s on tap at their office to power employees.

What’s on tap at your office?

At 2U, we're mostly coffee drinkers Monday through Thursday, but every Friday we send a brave team of volunteers over to the Chelsea Market Filling Station to grab a dozen growlers of whatever they have on tap that week.

What’s your favorite?

I know this sounds weird, but my favorite tap is our ice maker that makes porous ice nuggets. I'm not alone in this, I swear! In the summer, our teams uses it to make iced coffee and slushy seltzers.

What’s on your wish list for future drinks on tap?

It would be great to have a coffee lab with some of those heated bars for pour-overs. We’d also love a triple faucet kegerator to reduce the amount of hauling we have to do for Beer Fridays!
