The end of spring is the season of graduations and celebrations, which means there are plenty of people looking forward to their next opportunity — whether they’re a recent college graduate or an experienced professional eager to take the next step in their career.

Luckily, there are several local New York companies hiring right now.

We spoke with employees at six New York companies that are hiring for a wide variety of positions. These companies are working to make a difference for renters, combat climate change, support company expense programs, bring a human element back to media buying and create affordable personal care products.

Read on to find out how new hires can make an impact at Findigs, Air Company, Navan, The Trade Desk, Harry’s Inc and TheGuarantors

Emery Tarpkin
Senior Recruiter • The Trade Desk

The Trade Desk is a media buying platform that aims to provide advertisers with a cohesive and programmatic homebase for their campaigns.

What drew you to The Trade Desk? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

I was already familiar with The Trade Desk because I previously recruited for programmatic sales teams. However, I had heard about its overall positive culture from current employees. Personally, I was drawn to my team due to how smart and experienced they are, and I enjoyed the honest, sincere conversations I had with my prospective manager. Since joining, I continue to be impressed by the colleagues I get to work alongside and learn from each day.

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

As a talent acquisition professional, success is usually metric-driven, so I’m happy that I’ve hit my recruiting goals and made some great hires. However, I feel that my biggest (and hopefully ongoing) success has been having thoughtful conversations with leaders centered on current and historical themes around talent acquisition and how they have and will impact the organization in the future.

Since joining, I continue to be impressed by the colleagues I get to work alongside and learn from each day.”

The Trade Desk is currently hiring for a handful of roles. How can new hires make an immediate impact at the company?

The best way to make an immediate impact is to ask questions, find time to learn everything you can about the business and meet with as many people as possible to develop relationships across the organization. One can only make an impact when they know how they are prepared to do so, and being a sponge will set up a new hire for that path to success.

Matt Dumoff
President, Expense Sales • Navan

Navan is a fintech company offering travel and expense management solutions for client companies.

What drew you to Navan? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

I came from the expense and payments space before joining Navan. What drew me to the company was that so many of my past clients were already managing their business travel and having an amazing experience using Navan.

At the time it was rare to find a company growing so quickly with such a strong product compared to traditional competitors. It just so happened that Navan opened a sales and success office in New York when I got hired. The founding team members in New York set the pace like I hadn’t seen in my career and I knew it was a team I needed to be a part of. Four and a half years later, I am still building and winning with many of those same teammates. I think it’s safe to say my expectations have been met.

We always look for candidates who are intelligent and can prove they have a figure-it-out mentality when it comes to life and work.”

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

My biggest success has been helping launch our expense and corporate card business. I’ve been fortunate enough to work cross-functionally with such a reliant team. However, we have gone through some challenging periods.

Travel virtually stopped in March of 2020 and travel was not a top priority to finance and accounting teams. We pivoted our focus to solving problems for the back office by managing spend as well as giving visibility and control over spend. Especially with lots of companies having a distributed workforce from 2020 to 2022, this was a pain point for many finance and accounting leaders. Getting to play an integral role within the organization from the time our expense offering was a minimum viable product, to now where we’re supporting many global, public organizations’ entire expenses and corporate card programs has been one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences in my career.

Navan is currently hiring for a handful of roles. How can new hires make an immediate impact at the company?

We always look for candidates who are intelligent and can prove they have a figure-it-out mentality when it comes to life and work. We have endless resources surrounding enablement, like product demo environments and live training boot camps. Our best salespeople take extreme ownership in their first 60 days by mastering our product, learning the industry and understanding and delivering the value prop to finance and accounting teams.

Al Welby
Senior Manager, Retail Analytics • Harry's Inc.

Harry’s Inc offers a variety of personal care products for shaving and grooming while centering affordable price points.

Think back to first joining the team. What drew you to the company? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

When I initially applied for a role at Harry’s it was the idea of working as part of a smaller organization with a scrappy, entrepreneurial approach rooted in values that aligned with my own. Those interests were reaffirmed throughout the interview process — but it was the people that really sold me. Throughout the entire interview process, it was clear that the team was invested in getting to know me both on and off the resume.

Ever since I started the human first element of the organization has been reaffirmed for me time and time again. This has come to life through formal policies and processes like a flexible time off policy, learning and development stipends, team mental health days and robust career development resources. It’s also shown through many informal moments like onboarding coffee chats, hanging out with the team at dinners or happy hours and everyone’s perspective being respected and heard regardless of their level, tenure or title.

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

I’m most proud of being able to build my team from scratch and seeing it all come to life and the impact we’ve been able to have on the organization. I’ve had the opportunity to hire and onboard my team, build by team vision and see my team’s work scale across the organization.

Ultimately, my biggest success story is watching my team grow through lateral moves and promotions and/or making progress with their personal development plans.

Throughout the entire interview process, it was clear that the team was invested in getting to know me both on and off the resume.”

Harry’s, Inc is currently hiring for a handful of roles. How can new hires make an immediate impact at the company?

In order for a new hire to make an immediate impact, I would encourage them to embrace two behaviors:

1. Be curious. Ask questions to learn about the business and why we do things. New hires being curious not only helps them learn but also helps the total team think critically about the business and ways of working. The questions that new hires ask will very likely help us challenge the status quo and enable us to improve as a total team.

2. Bring all of your authentic self to work. If you are a new hire to the team, be confident that we brought you on to the team because you are the best person to do the job. We want to hear your perspectives, questions and input based on both your personal and professional experience. A diverse set of voices and perspectives is what helps us grow and learn — so don’t be shy in sharing your opinion.

Stacey Adamson
Head of People • AIR COMPANY

Air Company is a greentech company creating products like perfume and hand sanitizer from recycled carbon.

What drew you to Air Company? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

What initially drew me to Air Company was its focus on a type of innovation I didn’t know existed: CO2 utilization and its potential to combat climate change.

After my first meeting with our CEO Greg Constantine, I became particularly interested in supporting a workforce that is deeply committed to addressing climate change. In my current role as head of people, I am responsible for building a strong culture, managing talent, creating opportunities for growth and advancement as well as promoting diversity, equity and inclusion and evaluating opportunities for learning and development. I am thrilled to be a part of this dynamic work environment and to contribute to Air Company’s exciting journey from the ground up.

New hires who come in with a curious mind, openness to ideas and a fresh perspective add tremendous value to our organization, and we highly encourage it.”

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

In the beginning, we were a small but mighty team. We tripled our headcount in the first year which allowed us to have a broader and more diverse employee group. Now in 2023, we are able to solicit feedback from this group and use it to implement our culture and benefits offering. Supporting employees through resources and benefits is key to employee happiness and ensuring that Air Company remains a great place to work.

Air Company is currently hiring for a handful of roles. How can new hires make an immediate impact at the company?

Research and development, as well as innovation, are in our DNA. We encourage new hires to bring a fresh set of eyes, lean on their diverse experiences and actively contribute their unique perspectives and ideas to projects and discussions. By offering innovative solutions and thinking critically about existing processes, they help shape the future vision of Air Company.

Amita Jhunjhunwala
Senior Engineering Manager • Findigs, Inc.

Findigs is real estate tech company that provides underwriting software for the rental space.

What drew you to Findigs? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

I wanted to join a mission-driven team that was committed to providing technology-driven solutions to serve others. I was familiar with the rental services space and Findigs immediately drew my attention because I recognized the importance of a straightforward and equitable rental process for all applicants. I was impressed by the company’s leaders’ vision and determination to not only find a better way to screen rental applicants but moreover to become a true driver of change in the broader housing market.

When I joined, we identified that in order to make great strides toward our goal, we would need to make significant changes to our engineering team and practices. One of those changes was the establishment of the Quick Response Force and a focus on building product features that align with the company vision. The QRF team has been successful in providing frontline support for client queries and issues, limiting distractions for product engineering teams.

We are actively seeking individuals who share our passion for our company’s mission and can contribute to the development of solutions that benefit all renters.”

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

My biggest success is establishing strong relationships with my cross-functional partners. I lead a product engineering team that prioritizes shipping high-quality features for consumers. My team, alongside our product counterparts, utilizes data to inform how we tackle the next feature. We have been successful in implementing processes that have increased the velocity and predictability of our release cycle. Our collaboration with our colleagues has been critical to our wins and continues to be as we are focused on improving our efforts. We value feedback from our team members and we will always assess our processes and tools to make changes that result in better outcomes.

Findigs is currently hiring for a handful of roles. How can new hires make an immediate impact at the company?

We are actively seeking individuals who share our passion for our company’s mission and can contribute to the development of solutions that benefit all renters. As a rapidly growing startup, we have encountered many challenges in balancing speed and scalability while maintaining modular systems. However, we are confident in our ability to overcome these obstacles with the help of individuals who possess a sharp eye for identifying opportunities and can take the initiative in addressing these issues, while building new features to support business growth.

Jack Blankenship
Engineering Manager • TheGuarantors

TheGuarantors is a real estate and fintech company providing rental insurance for renters and operators alike.

What drew you to TheGuarantors? How have your expectations been met since coming aboard?

When first joining the team, I was excited by the prospect of being able to work for a growing startup with a great mission. I was drawn to the possibilities we have to increase the affordability and accessibility options for renters that would otherwise not have the opportunity.

My expectations have been exceeded since I first joined the company, as I’ve been a part of many projects to both launch new offerings as well as improve existing offerings to both renters and operators. Every week brings more opportunities to impact renters in a meaningful way. I have also been able to grow my management experience and collaborate with different teams on these projects.

What’s been your biggest success story since joining the team?

One of the biggest successes I have been a part of is expanding our renter’s insurance platform from three states to 49 states. This was a large project that required planning and collaboration across many groups that I was able to take a leadership role.

We were able to build software to support more customers, update our purchasing and verification options and integrate with more third-party platforms. This has made the platform for our customers easier to use and access. Being able to be a part of such a large project has been a huge success, not only for me and the teams that did the work but also for the company and expanding our outreach.

My expectations have been exceeded since I first joined the company.”
