Thrillist is seeking an experienced creative leader with a written and video background to oversee daily editorial content on our Snapchat Discover channel, as well as crack new editorial formats and direct platform-appropriate travel coverage. The Executive Travel Editor, Snapchat is responsible for setting the story slate for our daily editions, managing day to day workflow, top-editing copy and headlines, coaching writers and editorial producers, and planning out themed editions. You will work closely with the Executive Editor, Creative Director, and Audience Development to constantly hone the channel’s strategy and make sure the creative is aligned with the Thrillist vision.

Thrillist Snapchat focuses predominantly on travel, which is a core pillar of the brand. The ideal candidate will be eager to showcase travel expertise through a video-first language, and utilize an existing database of written travel content to elevate the brand to an excited audience. Our Snapchat Discover edition will be 5 days per week, so consistently planning ahead and reacting to relevant national conversation is essential.

You should have an iron-clad understanding of the Thrillist voice, brand, and travel content. You should be witty, creative, super flexible, able to track and apply data learnings into editorial planning, and recognize good creative and good storytelling when you see it.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to top-edit and package travel content and think creatively about how to turn into video
  • Communicate constantly with the Creative Director to manage daily workflow of stories with a team of creative and editorial producers
  • Build a system for lining up stories well ahead of publication date
  • Own and maintain content calendar
  • Oversee 4-5 editorial team members, ensuring all stories are delivered on time and on brand; jump in to write as needed
  • Give constructive feedback to team members and freelancers in a timely manner (in person ideally) and in line with Thrillist best practices
  • Ensure the daily output of stories feels informative, timely, fresh, and fun, and flows together
  • Work closely with the Head of Video and Executive Editor to maintain, improve and channel the Thrillist voice and tone
  • Hit monthly and quarterly metrics
  • Proof all copy and headlines before publish, and review in CMS and on mobile devices
  • Work with Audience Development team to schedule publish of daily Snapchat Discover editions
  • Communicate status updates to Management on a regular basis
  • When needed, correspond with Snapchat reps to get feedback on editions and apply suggestions/necessary changes
  • Keep a running list of editorial insights/best practices to keep team improving over time and periodically communicate this to Snapchat Team

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years storytelling experience, ideally in digital media (video experience a plus)
  • At least 2+ years editorial leadership or management experience
  • A sharp understanding of social media and video platforms - and willingness to learn more and adapt as this fast-moving environment changes
  • Strong creative judgement and strong storytelling skills; a passion for travel and video
  • Highly organized: Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and communicate progress
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines
  • Adaptable and able to get things done with limited resources
  • Creative thinker
  • Familiarity with footage sourcing and video editing
  • Experience coordinating across departments: editorial, analytics, creative
  • Passion for and deep understanding of the Thrillist voice and tone
  • A deep and passionate knowledge of the food, travel, and entertainment worlds that never even comes close to snobbery
