OVERVIEW

This features editor role is part of VICE's US features board, a cross-vertical unit tasked with developing our most ambitious storytelling. This role requires a talented, careful editor capable of crafting unique and engaging feature packages, and a familiarity with the wide range of topics VICE covers. We're looking for someone who wants to take advantage of VICE's significant multimedia and multiplatform resources to produce their stories.

What we're looking for in an ideal candidate:

  • 4-8 years digital experience
  • A passionate journalist who thrives on a collaborative environment and enjoys pushing those around them to be more creative in their approach to stories.
  • You should have a solid track record of developing and editing features. Strong copy and line editing skills are a must.
  • In addition to VICE's digital titles, the features board also works with VICE magazine on big picture planning and execution of the quarterly issues as well as assigning and editing.
  • An ideal candidate would have passion for a storytelling skill or set of skills outside of editing text. We are flexible because the features board has a wide range of expertise to tap into, but this could include multimedia work, investigative skills, or data journalism experience.
  • We'd like someone who's begun to establish themselves in their career and is looking for the next phase of personal growth, driven by the experimentation and learnings built into the features board process.
  • Because of the wide range of topics that the features board taps into, a diversity of experience is a must.

Day-to-day editorial duties include, but aren't limited to:

  • Working in tandem with the senior features editor, VICE Magazine editor-in-chief, VICE site leads, and executive editors to review and develop pitches that align with each site's core beats.
  • Story producing from pitch to publish: working with reporters and site editors to develop the reporting strategy, format, and media elements for each individual story package.
  • Copy and line editing: understanding of what makes a compelling VICE story and a demonstrated ability to support and develop reporters is crucial.
  • Scheduling deadlines for each package, creating and tracking budgets, and communicating with multiple content teams within VICE as required for each project.

VICE's features board supports our digital content staff in telling ambitious, industry-leading stories, which means success in this role includes both success in storytelling and success in staff development. This features editor role will be judged on the following basket of criteria:

  • Ability to develop solid pitches into unique, world-class feature packages, including working with managers to develop stories from across the digital department.
  • Ability to introduce experimental storytelling forms and demonstrate an expanded scope of what a "feature" can be for VICE.
  • Ability to provide timely feedback on pitches and projects to staffers and vertical EICs to assess progress and improve performance; highlight successful projects at VICE and at competitors in order to encourage innovation and demonstrate what we're looking for and hoping to achieve.

If you require a reasonable accommodation during the application and selection process, please let us know. We will work together to best meet your needs.
