BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading tech-powered, diversified media company that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally through its cross-platform news and entertainment network. The company produces articles, lists, quizzes, videos, and original series; lifestyle content through brands including Tasty, the world’s largest social food network; original reporting and investigative journalism through BuzzFeed News and HuffPost; an industry-leading affiliate business, strategic partnerships, licensing and product development through BuzzFeed Commerce; and original productions across broadcast, cable, SVOD, film and digital platforms for BuzzFeed Studios.

The Role

BuzzFeed News is looking for a health reporter to join our team in publishing engaging, entertaining, and science-backed journalism. You are eager, looking for fresh ideas and stories and reporting them in a way that makes them easy-to-understand and relevant for our audience.

Excited about both service and enterprise journalism, you are as comfortable writing explainers and debunking myths as you are reporting on news and internet trends. We're looking for someone who is devoted to providing the most scientifically accurate and medically sound information possible, but who also has a quirky outlook and desire to cover stories that can't be found anywhere else.

You are a pro at breaking down complex, health-related topics in ways that make them accessible, engaging, and helpful to anyone.

You will cover topics like infectious disease (including COVID-19 and the flu), wellness, mental health, fitness, nutrition, sex, relationships, parenting, and more. You are eager to identify and explore the facts behind trends on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and more. You should also have the ability to write and report stories that are not only inclusive but speak to a diverse audience and variety of lived experiences.

You will report to our Health Editor, who is based in New York. While a New York City-based candidate is our preferred choice, remote candidates will also be considered.

You Will

  • Write posts on a daily or weekly schedule that are smart, engaging, helpful, and entertaining.
  • Be an idea-generating whiz, bringing compelling story ideas to work every day
  • Be data-driven, keeping an eye on metrics and other measures of story success
  • Be ahead of the rest. Spotting trends early, you're eager to jump on health and wellness trends and provide information that people need before they even know they need it
  • Report stories in a way that's accurate, nuanced, inclusive, and based on scientific evidence
  • Work with our health and science teams to find important stories no one else is telling
  • Be collaborative with other team members, including our visuals and social team, to help create outstanding work that is eye-catching and shareable

You Have

  • 3+ years experience covering health at a news or major media outlet. However, if you have more (or less) experience, please apply. We are willing to train someone who might not have the specific amount of years or type of experience.
  • A familiarity (or willingness to learn) about smart optimization of content regarding SEO and engagement on social media platforms.
  • Incredible attention to detail, and are a stickler about getting the facts right.
  • Experience interviewing health experts. You have a keen sense of which sources are most likely to be reliable and offer helpful, science-backed advice to readers on any given topic.
  • A collaborative approach but also able to jump on important tasks when needed, and open to direction.
  • Experience reading and understanding scientific studies and research in general

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
