Science Editor
BuzzFeed News is looking for an inspiring, enthusiastic, and nimble editor to lead our team of five science reporters.
You will want to publish untold science stories — to avoid cheerleading, the embargoed-study churn, and inconsequential changes in policy, and instead find original stories to grab the attention of a large audience. Our newsroom pushes for investigative stories, big and small, with real-world impact and a connection to the biggest stories of this cultural moment.
Over the past four years, the science team has tackled multiple stories and formats, including:
—A series on the scientific misconduct of Cornell professor Brian Wansink, prompting a university investigation and Wansink’s resignation;
—Several investigations revealing sexual harassment allegations against leading scientists, ultimately leading to their resignation or termination;
—An award-winning series on the government’s aerial surveillance, including interactive maps and an innovative machine-learning algorithm trained to search for hidden spyplanes over US airspace;
—Visualizations and quizzes that make the climate crisis real;
—A deeply reported ongoing series exploring the human cost of the opioid crisis, and efforts to combat its toll;
—Investigations of harmful medical treatments, from eye drops that blinded people to Facebook’s “poop cult”;
—Stories based on public records requests, such as exposing how the Department of Energy lost control at the country’s largest nuclear cleanup site, and how the State Department botched its investigation into the mysterious illness that struck diplomats in Cuba.
If all this sounds exciting, please submit a short cover letter that includes:
—your experience reporting on or editing science investigations, and
—your thoughts on our coverage to date, and what you would focus on as new editor of the desk. How would you push to make BuzzFeed’s science stories stand apart from other publications?
You will work from the BuzzFeed offices in New York City, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. We offer a great compensation package and a stock option program.
Responsibilities:
- Publish innovative, ambitious stories with real-world impact
- Manage and edit a wide mix of breaking news, enterprise, features, and investigations
- Run a largely autonomous team within a larger newsroom, balancing its independence with collaboration across desks (particularly the Investigations, Tech and Breaking News teams)
- Manage the production of all of the team’s stories, including coordinating with designers, copy editors, social curators, the PR team, and the newsroom lawyer
Requirements:
- At least 7 years of experience reporting and/or editing for a journalistic outlet, including landing investigative stories with real-world impact
- Experience turning complicated ideas into clear and lively prose
- A critical, skeptical eye for hype and baloney
- Love for and excitement about the internet
