The Role 

You will report to the Executive Editor of Culture and solicit and edit freelance writers, edit staff writers based on assignment, and lead special projects and packages.

You Will 

• Solicit and edit freelance and staff essays that illuminate or ignite cultural conversations
• Manage the editorial calendar and freelance database
• Create story ideas in group meetings
• Work with multiple desks during news events
• Produce and take the lead on theme weeks/department collaborative projects
• This editor does not have direct reports

You Have

• 3+ years editing experience
• Experience with soliciting and editing engaging/nuanced essays about culture that people want to read and share
• Comfort navigating between politics, pop culture, books, and identity writing
• Creativity on how you approach story angles
• Nimbleness in a changing news cycle
• Familiarity with BuzzFeed READER's mission and the importance of culture writing as a whole
• Experience editing stories about both popular and oft-ignored cultural conversations (specifically identity, entertainment, media and books), several modes of literary editing, writing and reporting, understanding of the impact culture stories can have on how we live, media industry knowledge
