DigitalOcean is the cloud of choice for developers around the world.
The Role
Do you ever wonder what happens inside the cloud?

DigitalOcean (NYSE: DOCN) simplifies cloud computing so builders can spend more time creating software that changes the world. With our mission-critical infrastructure and fully managed offerings, DigitalOcean enables startups and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to rapidly deploy and scale modern applications. As a remote-first organization, our employees, like our customers, are based around the world.

We want people who are passionate about building the infrastructure and platforms that will improve the resiliency, scaling, and development speed for cloud services.

We are looking for an experienced database engineer with an operations background in building sustainable solutions for data storage and streaming platforms. Our team’s mission statement is to “provide tools and expertise to solve common operational problems, accelerating and simplifying product development.” As part of the team, you’ll be working with a variety of data-related technologies, including Clickhouse, MySQL, Kafka, and Redis, in an effort to transform these technologies into platform services. NOTE: this is not a ‘data scientist’ role, rather this role is to help design and build datastore-related platforms for internal stakeholder groups within DigitalOcean.  See more below for role expectations.

This is an opportunity to build the services and systems that will accelerate the development of DigitalOcean’s cloud features. Services will provide highly available, operationally elegant solutions that serve as a foundation for a growing product base and serving a global audience. This is a high-impact role and you’ll be working with a large variety of product engineering teams across the company.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Administration, operations, and performance tuning of multiple datastores with a focus on Clickhouse
  • Architecting new database Clickhouse database infrastructure on bare metal
  • Delivering managed data platform solutions as a service that facilitate adoption and offer operational elegance
  • Working closely with product engineering and infrastructure teams to drive adoption of services throughout the company
  • Instrument and monitor services developed to ensure operational performance
  • Create tooling and automation to reduce operational burdens
  • Establishing best practices for development, deployment, and operations
  • Driving adoption of services throughout the company
  • Interact with developers and teams to resolve site and database issues

What We’ll Expect From You:

  • Experience supporting clickhouse or another OLAP datastore in a production environment, with in-depth knowledge of topics such as backups, high availability, and performance tuning
  • Distinguished track record developing and automating platform solutions that serve the needs of other engineering teams
  • Experience with other data technologies such as Kafka and Redis
  • Fluency in SQL, Python, Bash, or other scripting languages
  • Experience with Linux performance troubleshooting
  • Experience with configuration management tooling such as Chef & Ansible

What We’d Love You To Have:

  • An understanding of using Kubernetes as well as using Hashicorp Consul
  • Familiarity with continuous integration tools such as Concourse, GitHub Actions
  • Some familiarity with Go readability
  • Passion for production engineering done in a resilient fashion
  • You have a passion for not repeating yourself (DRY) by way of automation

What Will Not Be Expected From You:

  • Demonstrated expertise in being a ‘data scientist’ - this role has much more production engineering focus
  • Crunching mundane support tickets day over day - be the Automator
  • Following a lengthy and strict product roadmap - engineers wear product hats as needed and help define what platform gets built

Why You’ll Like Working for DigitalOcean:

  • We reward our employees. The salary range for this position is between $128,000.00 - $182,000.00 based on relevant years of experience and skills. Employees may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance. We also provide equity compensation to eligible employees including grants of equity upon hire and the option to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.

  • We care about your well-being. In addition to cash and equity compensation, we also offer employees a competitive array of benefits. While the philosophy around our benefits is the same worldwide, specific benefits may vary in other countries due to local regulations and preferences.
