About the job
Spruce is looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to join our Finance team in NYC, reporting to the Senior Accounting Manager. An ideal candidate will have an interest in real estate and will thrive in a fast-paced environment.
This role will help lead some of the projects and processes within the accounting world and provide mentorship to Spruce’s junior accounting staff. Particular areas of responsibility may include month-end close, GL reconciliations, process improvements, audit responses, and other critical accounting functions. You will play a leading role in developing scalable processes and contribute to Spruce's long-term growth.
What you'll do
- Drive month-end close process, including reviewing monthly journal entries and related account reconciliations
- Oversee reconciliation of general ledger accounts, credit card purchases, daily bank activity, and monthly escrow activity
- Perform accounting research to determine appropriate treatment under relevant accounting guidance, and ensure proper accounting and reporting of these transactions
- Ensure the smooth function of Spruce’s escrow-related financial operations including the successful execution of deposits, withdrawals and bank wires
- Lead process improvement and take charge on exciting projects that achieve scalability and efficiency, system design, and core accounting framework and management reporting
- Play a leadership role in statutory, underwriters, financial statement audits and compliance/consultants requests
- Develop and maintain effective internal controls
What we're looking for
- 7+ year(s) of relevant Accounting experience; Big Four experience highly preferred
- Bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting
- Active CPA or CPA eligible highly preferred
- Experience in Title and Escrow preferred
- Proven problem-solving skills, especially within a fast-moving and highly innovative environment
- Excellent communication skills; proven ability to communicate effectively with internal and external business partners at various levels
- Ability to drive projects forward with limited resources and a desire to take on additional responsibilities
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google Office Suite
- Experience with cloud-based finance tools, ideally including NetSuite, Bill.com, and Teampay
