Director of Finance
Teachable’s mission is to “empower Creators to monetize their expertise.” Our online platform enables individuals and small businesses (our “Creators”) to build, host and sell online courses and coaching. (Examples of our Creators and their offerings can be found here, here and here.) We generate revenue in two ways: (1) from monthly or annual subscription fees (SaaS) paid to us by our Creators for access to our platform; and (2) from transaction fees charged as a percent of the value of courses sold by Creators through our platform. In 2020 our revenue grew 80% and we ended the year with over 38,000 subscribers. During that time we also processed nearly $500 million in course sales.
In April 2020 Teachable was acquired by Hotmart, an online platform designed to enable people “to make a living from their passions.” Hotmart’s operations and customers are concentrated in Brazil, but the company is increasingly global in scope. Hotmart’s investors include General Atlantic Partners and GIC (the sovereign wealth fund of Singapore).
In a desire to continue to expand Teachable’s finance team, as well as to more tightly align the team with Hotmart’s global finance organization, we are seeking to hire a Director of Finance. This is a newly created role which reports jointly to the Global CFO of Hotmart and the General Manager of Teachable.
The Role
The Director of Finance will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of Teachable’s finance team, including Accounting, FP&A and Tax. Each of these functions will also jointly report to their counterparts within the global Hotmart finance organization. The candidate must therefore be comfortable building relationships across organizations, ensuring the Teachable finance team has clear requirements from disparate stakeholders and is accountable for meeting those requirements.
GIven the rapid growth of Teachable, the Teachable finance team is budgeted to more than double in size during 2021. In partnership with their direct reports, the Director of Finance will have the opportunity to support the build out of this team, while simultaneously ensuring that we maintain a high standard of excellence in all day-to-day financial operations.
This is a full-time in-person position based in our New York, NY office. (Note that Teachable is fully remote until September 2021. Upon our return, we are providing teams with the option of a hybrid office model, allowing teams to work some days in the office and some days remotely. This will be determined on a team by team basis.)
Responsibilities
- Oversee all day-to-day aspects of Teachable Finance, including Accounting, Tax and FP&A. Ensure both Teachable functions (for example, the Product and Marketing teams) and Hotmart Finance are supported by the Teachable Finance team
- Assist in the ongoing buildout of the Teachable Finance team, ensuring that we are always prepared for the next step in our lifecycle and are able to ‘get ahead’ of anticipated requirements. This will be accomplished by developing a deep understanding of the Teachable business, as well as Hotmart’s requirements of Teachable Finance
- Hire, manage, develop, and mentor team members. Build a strong and positive culture for the Finance team.
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of progressively senior finance management experience -- must have had “hands on” management experience leading a team
- Familiarity with multiple aspects of finance, including Accounting (e.g. revenue recognition principles), Tax (for example, US State Sales Tax and implications of Wayfair), FP&A (budgeting and forecasting, variance reporting, metrics germane to a SaaS business); Compliance (SOX) experience would be an advantage
- Previous experience in a technology company and with SaaS based revenue models
- A strong, thoughtful and mature manager with an interest in mentoring and leading team members while building cohesive teams. Demonstrated expertise in hiring and retaining employees.
- Ability and willingness to navigate a dual reporting relationship / ability to manage multiple stakeholders
- Experience working within a public company environment is desired, but not required
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and advanced level experience with Microsoft Excel
- Excited to work independently, while knowing when to seek guidance and manage upward
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Ability to speak Portuguese a nice to have
