About Spruce

Spruce is the platform enabling modern real estate transactions. We work with forward thinking mortgage lenders, real estate companies and investors, and we believe the future of real estate will be driven by automation, efficiency and digital experiences, and we provide the products and services necessary to make that happen.

Spruce is looking for a Director of FP&A to lead our growing financial planning and analysis team in NYC. This team maintains the company's operating model, partners across the organization to provide forward-looking analysis to support business decisions, helps determine pricing for new products, and analyzes capital allocation decisions. The team is also responsible for all planning processes, including the annual plan, monthly forecasts, and long-range plans.

Our business has grown both bigger and more complex, and this person will have the opportunity to help scale our FP&A group from small and scrappy into a well-honed machine that keeps the entire business healthy and pointed in the right direction. This role requires exceptional communication skills and a great deal of interaction and relationship building with key stakeholders across finance and the leadership team. This person will report to Spruce’s Head of Finance and spend at least some time each week in our New York office with the option to WFH.

What you'll do

  • Function as the key finance partner for the most senior business leaders in the company and build and manage a suitably-sized, multi-layer organization that partners with all of Spruce’s department heads to provide strategic financial support
  • Collaborate with leaders across Spruce on financial issues impacting their areas of accountability and guide your team in building/enhancing reporting to provide insights and analysis for key stakeholders, including budget vs. actual analyses, headcount reporting, and special projects
  • Continue building the foundation for our FP&A operations (people, processes, and systems) to enable better decision making for the company and its stakeholders
  • With contribution from your team, own our long-term financial model and running company-wide annual and monthly forecasting processes, including the development of budgets and financial targets
  • Build outstanding and effective relationships with cross-functional teams and ensure that FP&A is looked to across the organization as an essential partner
  • Oversee the creation of frameworks for how we evaluate investments and resource allocation decisions
  • Guide your team in collaborating with Accounting and the rest of the finance team to analyze and report out on budgeted results and when necessary, re-forecasting to shape decision-making
  • Build and manage the team that can understand and communicate financial results and trends to management, and recommend appropriate course of action when results vary from forecast
  • Lead your team in preparing materials for the Head of Finance, including board decks, investor materials, and other executive updates

What we're looking for

  • The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills from multiple years in an investing role as well as years of experience building and managing FP&A teams at a mature tech company; for example 10+ years combined experience in management roles in investment banking, private equity, finance, or FP&A
  • Proven ability to build and manage a nimble but high-powered team within a fast-moving and highly innovative environment
  • Experience managing employees at a range of skill levels, including everything from individual contributors to managers of managers
  • Experience working directly with business functional leaders and leading a team that supports a variety of functions, including Sales & Marketing, Operations, R&D and Strategy

We are proud of the team we’re building. We're committed to equal opportunity employment -- and beyond. We believe diverse experiences and perspectives build a stronger team and a better product. We welcome fresh perspectives and challenge our own assumptions to make Spruce better. The more inclusive we are as a company, the better we can serve our customers.
