About the Role
As General Counsel, you will provide hands-on support to all levels of the organization and manage the operations of the legal department. You will be an integral part of developing and structuring new business relationships while overseeing legal compliance and corporate governance. You will have the opportunity to research and lead legal issues that are key to the growth of our business as well as develop solutions. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will work cross-functionally with finance, operations, and compliance to drive implementation.
Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational
- Active executive on business leadership team to help manage business expansion and growth
- Lead legal strategy and implementation of our national network of audiologists and registered hearing aid dispensers
- Responsible for local regulatory changes and work with leadership team to lead public advocacy efforts and communications with regulators
- Lead legal strategy for customer facing operations and product, helping refine the customer experience from the legal and compliance perspective
- Act as Privacy Officer, coordinate with CTO on HIPAA and CCPA compliance
- Oversight of IP and regulatory compliance
- Manage litigation
- Partner with business development group to help structure, negotiate and document B2B relationships
- Mitigate and advise on risk management and liability insurance; manage dispute resolution
- General contract development, review and management
- Partner with operations team on health insurance/billing function
- Develop and refine marketing compliance guidelines and review marketing materials
- Develop and implement training programs in quality and compliance by working closely with Human Resources on related issues
- Establish best practices relating to employees and internal policies/procedures
- Select and manage outside counsel
Financial & Governance
- Attend Board meetings and provide board counsel, serve as board secretary
- Work closely with CFO and outside accountants on sales tax, revenue recognition, audit issues, loan and financing compliance
- Oversee debt and equity financings with CFO, coordinate with investors
Qualifications
- BSc degree in Law or J.D. degree
- 10+ years of proven general counseling experience in business environment, ideally with a startup
- Overall broad legal knowledge including corporate law, litigations, labor law, etc.
- Ability to develop legal strategy and to anticipate legal issues or risks
- Experience coordinating deal teams or shepherding transactions
- Experience working cross-functionally with different teams in a business
- Strong writing and organizational skills
- Knowledge of health care regulatory schema preferred
