These 5 startups offer totally unique employee perks — by offering their own products

Tech companies are known for their perks. T-shirts are more common than suits, flexible work hours replace the standard nine to five grind and ping-pong tables abound. And while free lunch is great, many of us would rather get to use the sweet products we're working with. These five NYC tech companies do just that.

Warby Parker is a true innovator when it comes to eyewear, offering an online platform for prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. The company’s larger mission is to offer designer eyewear at an affordable price, which it does for $95 per pair of glasses.

Unique perk: Warby Parker employees all score free eyewear, as well as hefty discounts for friends and family. Other great company perks include full medical insurance, cell phone reimbursement, 401k, a wellness stipend and quarterly team outings.

Birchbox is a subscription box service that provides monthly deliveries of five personalized beauty samples. The e-commerce platform lets customers easily and efficiently try, learn about and purchase beauty products through tailored shipments of surprise packages.

Unique perk: Birchbox employees get a free Birchbox subscription, as well as a 20 percent discount on products and $200 per year to buy anything in the Birchbox shop. The company also offers a flexible time off policy, full medical benefits and equity.

ClassPass offers subscription service that allows users to attend classes across different gyms and studios in their city. Instead of signing up for classes at one studio or paying for one gym membership, ClassPass members are afforded the flexibility to experiment with different workout regiments, from yoga to kickboxing to rock climbing.

Unique perk: Forget the standard corporate gym stipend — ClassPass employees get a free ClassPass membership (which typically runs at $135 per month for 10 classes). The company even encourages its employees to show up to work in their gym clothes!

Plated’s subscription box service allows users to choose from chef-designed recipes to get precisely measured ingredients delivered each week. A departure from other food delivery startups, Plated is unique in that it values personalization, allowing customers to choose their recipes each week, skip weeks of service and adjust the size of their order.

Unique perk: Employees at Plated eat well, as they’re all granted a weekly four plate box. Additionally, the company offers a fully-stocked kitchen, health benefits, progressive PTO policies and equity in the company.

Handy makes it easy to book household services. In lieu of searching, scheduling and negotiating prices to find a reliable professional, Handy’s platform allows customers to book trusted cleaning and handyman professionals at a click of a button.

Unique perk: Employees at Handy benefit from free monthly home cleanings. Additionally, the startup offers a flexible vacation policy, daily catered lunches and frequent team outings.
