Big to do: Here's what a software developer tackles on the job at Boxed

Since joining Boxed this spring, software developer Christopher Sung has worked on the company's iOS app and backend API platform. Recently, the new-ish employee gave us a sense of what he does all day. Read on to find out the most challenging item on his to do list, how he tackles it and what he does to celebrate a job well done.

BOXED IS: A household goods and grocery e-tailer.

MOST CHALLENGING ITEM ON TO DO LIST: Boxed items are sometimes sold on third-party sites. For each external site, we have to integrate our ordering system with theirs. We just added a new seller whose order format consists of over 400 different fields, all of which need to be parsed in the proper sequence to correctly obtain the data. It's not hard as much as it is detailed.

HOW I TACKLE IT: I make spreadsheets and devise structures that our software can use to properly handle the nuances of this seller and any future sellers our partnerships team may have in the pipeline. I also document as much as I can, in the event that another engineer needs to jump in at any point.

HOW I CELEBRATE A JOB WELL DONE: The completion of a few of my initial projects actually coincided with some company outings. One was a boat party around Manhattan, where we also had our company talent show. It was of surprisingly high quality. (I'm very impressed with the level of musicianship at Boxed, among other things.)
