Mixlab, a digital pharmacy for pets, announced Monday it got $20 million in fresh funding. The Series A was led by Sonoma Brands, and brings the NYC-based startup’s total funding raised to $30 million.

Founded in 2017, Mixlab aims to digitally transform the pet health space. Its technology allows veterinarians to write prescriptions in seconds, and then track the progress and therapy compliance of their patients all online. The platform also manages home delivery of medications, which means pet parents don’t have to drive somewhere to get their pets the medicine they need. All medications come in a personalized care package that includes a note from a pharmacist, instructions and a new toy.

Mixlab also operates its own compound pharmacy where it makes medications on demand.

In the end, the goal of the company is to streamline veterinarians’ workflow and simplify the lives of pet parents.

Keith Levy, an operating partner at Sonoma, likens Mixlab’s services to the burgeoning digital pharmacy space for humans. Companies like Capsule and Ro have raised massive mega rounds recently to keep up with skyrocketing demand for their prescription delivery services. Now, pet owners are expecting that same level of convenience, and Mixlab is capitalizing on this moment.

“Digital-based entrants into the human pharmacy space are indicative of an expectation of fast delivery and great service, and pet service, and pet parents want the same experience for their beloved companions,” Levy, who will be joining Mixlab’s board of directors, said in a statement. “As illustrated by the rave reviews received, Mixlab has the potential to fill that consumer demand while at the same time guaranteeing that the process is managed end-to-end by their trusted vet, which creates the winning recipe.”

Indeed, this news is coming at a time when pet adoptions have been surging, causing the entire global pet care industry to surpass $232 billion in 2020 alone. In just the last month, startups like Embark Veterinary and Wagmo have garnered investor attention for their unique takes on pet care, indicating that this space will likely grow even more this year.

Now, with fresh funding of its own, co-founder and CEO Fred Dijols says Mixlab plans to expand its same-day delivery services to new markets outside of just NYC and Los Angeles. The company is also hiring, with about a dozen open tech positions at its NYC headquarters and office in LA.
