The white-hot job market appears to be cooling off.

A few months ago the business pages were dominated by stories detailing the difficulties of hiring, but recently the headlines have featured announcements of hiring freezes. Google will be implementing a two-week hiring freeze according to a July 20 story from The Information, while Yahoo Finance reported that Meta and Apple are either slowing or stopping hiring altogether. 

Then there are the layoffs, which reached 32,517 in June, a 57 percent increase from May and the highest number of layoffs since February of 2021, according to job placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. 

That said, it’s not all doom and gloom. Instead of turning down the temperature, many New York tech companies are standing firm in the face of economic uncertainty and keeping their hiring plans intact. That includes the eight featured here, all of which are hiring now.

What’s your favorite perk or benefit your company offers, and why?

The one that stands out is our policy around unlimited PTO and summer Fridays. Every employee is encouraged to take time off — as in shutting down their email — with no questions asked. This ranges from sick days to taking time to catch up on life and errands or taking that dream beach vacation. Nothing is too big or small to qualify! It’s extremely important for folks to feel like they can bring their authentic self to work and take the time off to nurture it.

In addition to our generous leave policy, during the summer months we have summer Fridays. No matter where in the world you may be, you are expected to “turn off” at 1 p.m. local time and let the weekend begin. We’re also encouraged not to participate or schedule video calls on Fridays, which makes it a real day to catch up and start to unwind from the week.

What was the key driver in your decision to join OwnBackup?

What’s the coolest project you’ve worked on recently, and how did it help you grow professionally?

OwnBackup recently entered the ServiceNow ecosystem, and we wanted to create a splash for its Knowledge Live 2022 convention, at which we had a small presence. We devised a social media campaign: If attendees took a photo with any of our team members wearing a custom OwnBackup T-shirt, they would be entered for a chance to win a vacation! Tons of photos and 18,000 organic impressions later, people all over the convention were raving about the campaign. It was a success and also a lot of fun to create. A special shoutout to Brooke Glynn, our creative director, who designed the shirts in under 24 hours and helped bring this vision to life.

What was the key driver in your decision to join Movable Ink?

I joined Movable Ink in 2017 mainly because of the people and culture. Before joining Movable Ink, I never really felt I could be my authentic self at work. It was like I was living a double life: There was “work Bill” and “weekend Bill.” I heard so many good things about Movable Ink from former colleagues and friends who joined, so when the right opportunity came along I knew that I had to jump on it. I have not regretted it for one moment. Since joining, I have been impressed by the culture Movable Ink has built, the quality of talent and the overall awesome human beings we have been able to attract and retain.

What’s your favorite perk or benefit your company offers, and why?

The ability to learn and grow at all times. Over my five-year tenure I have held three different roles in various departments. I came onboard as a solutions consultant, supporting our sales team from a technical standpoint. I then moved to our business development team, focusing on partnerships and making technical integrations accessible to our clients. Today as a senior product manager, I have the opportunity to explore our product more broadly and ensure we’re continuously building solutions that address customer problems and while remaining in line with our overall business goals.  

My experiences in each role varied; however, through each I developed new skill sets, which is a testament to Movable Ink’s culture of intellectual curiosity. It has been great to dive into the different facets of the business, and this has helped me elevate myself professionally and personally.

TrialSpark is a pharmaceutical company whose technology is designed to run drug trials faster and more efficiently from end to end. It does this in part through the use of automation to clean and standardize trial data.

 

What was the key driver in your decision to join TrialSpark?

I joined TrialSpark chiefly because I loved the idea of the type of lawyer it could help me become. I have stayed because even after more than three years here, I am still very much “becoming.”

I transitioned to TrialSpark from a law firm, going from one of many to one of just two — now three — attorneys. My move came with a sizable shift in both priorities and mindset. With innovation at the core of all we do, perfection has naturally ceased to be the goal, and I’ve found my mind no longer has much room for fear of failure. Instead, the game for me is simply doing the best with what I have, and it’s a challenge that keeps my work interesting and pushes me to constantly evolve my thinking.

Sometimes it looks like me racing through contracts at about five times my preferred speed. Other times it’s me assessing risk based on about 10 different “what ifs”.  As we tread more firmly into the drug development space, I’m sure I’ll experience much more of the same but through continually changing lenses, which will keep me busy in all the right ways.

What’s the coolest project you’ve worked on recently, and how did it help you grow professionally?

We recently had to rework our recruitment application flow for a few select scenarios to allow caregivers and/or family members to be able to apply for a clinical trial on a potential subject’s behalf. I was called in to help ensure we wouldn’t run afoul of any subject rights or other privacy or regulatory considerations and to make sure we were obtaining the necessary legal consents. 

I particularly love working through and distilling down more technically complex questions since issues like that stretch my mind so much more. This project required me to get up to speed on, and convey the main legal issues in, a surprisingly nebulous legal landscape while also providing guidance on how to move forward. All of this was done bearing in mind the additional product and engineering concerns regarding the final design of the flow and the feasibility of any proposed builds. It was an exercise in harmonizing several competing interests, which helped me develop that much greater nuance to my legal advice approach.

I had worked for two large institutions my whole career and set out to work for a smaller, nimbler firm where my voice mattered. What’s your favorite perk or benefit your company offers, and why?

Flexibility is important to me, and I’ve found that EquiLend offers the right balance of in-office collaboration time and remote work. We are given 100 business days a year to work remotely that can be used in any manner as long as it’s approved by your manager. Three days a week in the office and two from home, or if you want to work four or five days in the office and save days to travel and work remotely for longer stretches you can do that, too!  

In the past few years, I’ve worked from three remote locations. The flexibility has enabled me to be with my family more while continuing to work at a diligent pace.

Octane is a fintech company that connects motorists with loans for recreational vehicles, including ATVs, motorcycles and snowmobiles. The company also operates its own lending institution, Roadrunner Financial, and media outlets, such as Cycle World and UTV Driver. 

 

You’ve been with Octane for three years. What’s the number one reason you’ve stayed?

I love having the opportunity to make an impact and drive meaningful change. If you’re eager and able to do something that adds value to the company and our customers, you can do it. For example, I recently completed a cross-functional project to streamline and simplify the application process for our customers while driving originations for the company. My role was to design a model that made our verification process more accurate and even easier to use while mitigating risk.

The end result was a faster, simpler financing process that drove down average approval times to minutes or seconds instead of hours like our competitors. This in turn helps our dealer partners close more deals and connect more customers with their passions. It’s rewarding to understand the direct impact my work has on my company, our customers and the industry.

 

What’s your favorite perk or benefit your company offers, and why?

Octane is a remote-first company, and our people — myself included — benefit from work-life balance. Our approach to work is based on flexibility and trust. I regularly work from our office in New York because of the great culture there. My coworkers are smart and collaborative and you can’t beat the perks, like free lunches each Wednesday! 

However, being able to work anytime and from anywhere has helped me find and maintain work-life balance without giving up opportunities to do meaningful work. I get to collaborate with great coworkers on cool projects and still spend evenings with my family. I’m grateful to work where my coworkers and company leaders support and encourage me in and out of the office.

What was the key driver in your decision to join Lev Capital?

The key driver in my decision to join was my conversations with leadership during the interview stage. I found that leaders here lead with trust, care deeply about employees and prioritize doing the right thing over the easy thing. When speaking to our founders, I enjoyed discovering their direct and transparent communication style. 

Oftentimes in HR, it is hard to find true alignment with leadership due to a lack of transparency in points of view, agendas or even motivations. I am happy to say that this is not the case here. I am lucky to have leaders I can address ideas and concerns head on with and who I know will always be frank with me.

What’s your favorite perk or benefit your company offers, and why?

My favorite perk is not a typical one. Lev has this companywide series called “onsites” where they fly in remote team members — domestic and international — to our headquarters in NYC for a week. Throughout that week, we are able to participate in a series of team-building activities, do deeper dives on company topics and build meaningful connections with those we don’t get to see as often.

Particle Health’s technology is designed to make healthcare data easier for providers and pharmacists to access. Its API-based platform gathers and organizes data stored in disparate electronic health records, which is intended to provide a glimpse at both a patient’s medical history along with all recent tests, procedures and diagnoses.

 

What was the key driver in your decision to join Particle Health?

I was looking to become a leader and was enticed by the fact that I would be joining as a founding customer success team member. I love using my experience and operational-minded brain to take chaos and turn it into organized, tidy and scalable processes. Now I have the ability to help shape a team at Particle, from tools to customer relationships and the culture of the organization as a whole. 

It was crucial for me to find a team I would look forward to working with every day. I could tell right away that Particle assembled a talented, driven group who would help me learn and grow.
