What do supergiants, variable stars and tech employees have in common?

Besides being incredibly bright, they don’t stay in one place forever. Like stars in a growing constellation, employees seek companies that allow them to expand their skills and shine in new ways over time.

In fact, one Forbes survey found that one-third of employees would leave a company that fails to invest in their professional growth.

Fortunately, companies like Riskified recognize that interests evolve. Built In NYC sat down with one employee to learn more about her transition within the company and how she felt supported along the way.

Tell us about your recent promotion or role change at Riskified.

I recently made the exciting transition from content marketing coordinator to enterprise business development representative. This shift was made possible thanks to the incredible support and encouragement of my marketing managers, who guided me through every step of the process. While I truly enjoyed creating content, I felt ready to broaden my horizons and develop new skills in sales and business development. After expressing my interest in the BDR role, the HR team provided invaluable guidance throughout the interview process, while my managers offered mentorship and insights into what the position would entail.

Stepping into this more client-facing, revenue-focused role has been both challenging and rewarding, and I’m eager to continue growing in this new chapter of my career.

What will this new role allow you to do?

Moving into a BDR role allows me to build stronger sales and communication skills, particularly in prospecting, outreach and relationship-building with potential clients. It also gives me a deeper understanding of how Riskified’s solutions directly impact our customers, which is something I previously wrote about from a marketing perspective but now get to communicate firsthand.

This shift is also a great opportunity to develop negotiation skills, learn sales strategies, and gain experience in the revenue side of the business, all of which are valuable to my long-term career growth.

How would you describe Riskified’s culture or attitude regarding internal mobility and upskilling?

Riskified has an incredibly supportive and encouraging culture when it comes to internal mobility and upskilling. From the moment I expressed interest in transitioning to sales, my managers went out of their way to help me succeed. The company values growth and development and makes it clear that if you’re eager to learn and take on new challenges, there are opportunities available internally.
