Design Advice from Optimal Design's Joe Wascow

Have you ever pondered the reason products look the way that they do?  Who decided to put the time and effort into the feel of your razor?  Why does your toothbrush have cushioning on the handle?  Why do forks typically have 4 prongs and not 3 or 6?  It should come as no surprise that designers an engineers, for the most part, are behind these features.

 

Which is why I was so excited to speak with Joe Wascow, a co-founder at Optimal Design.  Optimal Design practices their name; they design products optimally.  And they are fantastic at doing so.  Their work spans military flight records to the redesigned Singer Sewing Machine (which won them the Red Dot Award). 

 

Joe did not disappoint, he had some interesting insight into the design process as well as the future of IOT.  He has worked tirelessly to position Optimal Design as the future leader of consumer IOT products.  He remarked that, “currently the focus has been on the software side of IOT, and people do not think about how it fits in the physical world”.  Joe (and Optimal Design) are betting big that IOT will be the huge in the coming 5 to 10 years, and they want to be prepared.
