We are open to remote candidates based in the Americas time zones.
Zero is a small team inside Metalab. We explore new tools, workflows, and ways of building products. We test ideas fast, validate what works, and feed learnings back to the broader org.
The role is client-facing. You'll be embedded in active engagements, putting our research to the test on real product work.
You design product experiences end-to-end and take them to ship: structuring flows, making the calls on hierarchy and interaction, then directing AI coding tools to turn your designs into working product. You push for working artifacts over polished mockups. You feed back honestly to the people building the tools.
If your work ends in Figma, that's good. If it ends in something the team can actually use, that's the point.
You're curious, adaptable, and excited that product design is changing in real time. This isn't a hand-off-to-engineering role. AI coding tools (Cursor, v0, Lovable, Claude, etc.) are becoming the bridge from design intent to shipped product, and you're the one wielding them to make it real.
What you’ll do
- Design and ship product experiences across web, mobile, AI-native, and emerging interfaces
- Translate ambiguous product briefs into working prototypes and shipped artifacts, not just static mockups
- Use AI tools and agents as a core part of your workflow to design, prototype, and produce working code
- Collaborate closely with engineering leads on larger products while independently owning implementation for prototypes, MVPs, and smaller products
- Present work clearly to clients and internal teams, holding the line on design quality while moving at the pace the work demands
- Build, test, and improve the design tooling and AI workflows themselves, feeding honest learnings back to R&D
Requirements
- Product design experience at a digital product agency, studio, or consultancy
- Strong UI/UX fundamentals: systems thinking, product intuition, and the ability to structure flows, interactions, and behavior thoughtfully under real client constraints
- You don't just use AI, you build with it. Likely in your personal life and hobby time. You've used Cursor, v0, Lovable, Claude, or similar to ship something real
- Comfortable enough with how frontend works (components, layout, responsive behavior, basic state) to direct AI coding tools effectively and recognize when the output is wrong
- A bias toward making ideas tangible quickly, with the judgment to know when polish actually matters
- Passionate about staying ahead of how AI is reshaping product design, with a personal point of view on what's working and what isn't
- Happy working alongside R&D, taking experimental tools and folding the findings back into how the broader org designs
