About Us

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

Description of Work

*This is a time-limited position. It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits for a limited time.
The IDEA Consultant: Alternate Achievement Standards position supports statewide implementation of Extended Content Standards (ECS) for students with significant cognitive disabilities and complex learning needs. This position provides professional learning, technical assistance, consultation, and resource development focused on standards-based instruction in literacy and mathematics aligned to grade-level content standards, evidence-based instructional practices, and alternate assessments such as NCEXTEND1. The consultant collaborates with Public School Units (PSUs), statewide organizations, and internal divisions to improve access, rigor, communication supports, and instructional outcomes for students with disabilities. The position also assists with standards revision, assessment alignment, and development of procedures and guidance related to educational programming for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide statewide professional learning focused on standards-based instruction, evidence-based literacy practices, mathematics instruction, AAC integration, and instructional strategies aligned to Extended Content Standards (ECS)
Create and facilitate professional development opportunities in multiple formats, including face to face, virtual, synchronous, and asynchronous learning environments for educators, administrators, and paraprofessionals.
Provide technical assistance and consultation to Public School Units regarding educational programming, instructional planning, and service delivery for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
Lead and support revision of Extended Content Standards and affiliated instructional resources to ensure vertical alignment, access, rigor, and standards-based instruction in literacy and mathematics.
Collaborate with Accountability Services and statewide stakeholders regarding alternate assessments, accommodations, accessible assessment design, and implementation processes for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
Develop procedures, guidance documents, and supporting resources related to referral, identification, instructional programming, and educational services for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
Valid Driver's License.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $63,927.00 - $92,688.00

Manager Preferences:  

  • Experience implementing standards-based instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities. 
  • Experience developing and delivering professional learning related to literacy, mathematics, AAC, and alternate achievement standards. 
  • Strong collaboration, technical assistance, and instructional coaching skills with educators.

The Office of Exceptional Children (OEC) provides statewide leadership, general supervision, professional learning, and technical assistance to Public School Units (PSUs) serving students with disabilities across North Carolina. The Supporting Teaching and Related Services (STARS) section supports implementation of evidence-based instructional practices, specialized instruction, alternate achievement standards, and related services to improve academic, behavioral, and postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities.  

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
