Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This is administrative and professional architectural work in the design, design review, project management, contract administration, construction monitoring and inspection of a wide range of the largest and most complex capital improvement projects. Employee performs hands on project work, oversees and evaluates on-the-job and outside training, develops and makes adjustments to objectives, assignments, schedules and priorities. Employee reviews technical and administrative decisions throughout all phases of a project, especially planning and programming. Duties and responsibilities also include construction management and contract administration. Employee oversees and is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, estimating and managing the complete design package preparation or review of designs for building aesthetic and/or spatial relationships and functionality, and securing and coordinating the review of the structural, mechanical and electrical portions such as site/civil, and any other disciplines of the design or plan reviews to in-house engineers. Employee conducts needs assessments project feasibility studies, initial cost estimating and project programming. The schematic design, design development, and construction and final drawings are performed by outside (i.e. private firms) at the direction of the employee and are reviewed for compliance with programming, applicable building codes, materials use, constructability, maintainability, life safety codes, special codes or design standards, and accepted architectural practices. Employee directs, supervises and/or coordinates completion of all project review comments, inspection of buildings for renovation, repair and code compliance needs, conducting research into new materials and design or construction techniques, and providing liaison(s) for all assigned projects. Work includes performing construction management and contract administration, reviewing and approving change orders and site planning of projects. Employee oversees and is responsible for plan review projects, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. This position provides advanced professional and technical leadership by developing designs and specifications, and may perform as the architect of record for the Department’s Capital Improvement Projects.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC19 $67,122 – $117,465
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Considerable knowledge managing budgets/contracts of some scope and complexity including resources such as budget and equipment within timelines.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate potentially problematic situations; resolves unusual problems.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships in complex and/or difficult situations in order to achieve work goals.
- Considerable knowledge of materials, construction techniques, codes and standards, soils, project management, and of the laws and ordinances pertaining to the design, construction and renovation of buildings and other facilities.
- Demonstrated ability to architecturally design and/or review the designs of outside consultants and to read and interpret all associated plans, codes and specifications.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in architecture or an engineering discipline related to the area of assignment from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience as a registered architect; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Valid license to practice architecture granted by the North Carolina Board of Architecture.
