Associate Director, Institutional Giving

Location: New York, NY and/or remote

Reports To: Managing Director, Institutional Advancement

Status: Full-time, Exempt  

Salary: $95,000 - $105,000
 

THE ROLE 

The Institutional Giving team at StoryCorps –- a unit of StoryCorps’ Revenue Department –- is a vital engine at the heart of StoryCorps, generating revenue and driving growth for the organization’s operations and special programs. StoryCorps’ annual institutional portfolio includes major foundations, government agencies, and publicly funded grant making entities, and generates more than $8M in annual and multi-year commitments.

The Associate Director will report to the Managing Director of Institutional Advancement and will collaborate with team members in Individual Giving & Major Gifts, as well as colleagues across the organization. 

The Associate Director must be an excellent writer and communicator, adept at coordinating multiple internal and external stakeholders to develop, fundraise for, and steward ongoing programming and special projects and initiatives. This position requires proven experience in grant and report writing and understanding of program design, budgeting, and project management. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO 

  • Cultivate and steward a loyal institutional donor portfolio by maintaining and tracking grant deliverables, drafting and submitting timely and accurate reports, and preparing compelling proposals for renewed support. 
  • Draft cogent and persuasive letters of inquiry and proposals addressing the interests of potential donors. 
  • Collaborate interdepartmentally with internal stakeholders -- including but not limited to Programs, Marketing & Communications, and Finance -- to ensure accuracy in reporting, adherence to grant deliverables, and program design development.
  • Provide guidance to Finance and Program departments in the creation  of accurate proposal budgets and financial reports to donors. 
  • Manage, coach and support the Coordinator, Institutional Giving, to maintain development systems and tracking, build a robust prospect pipeline, and ensure transparent and regular communication with multiple internal stakeholders. 
  • Support front-line fundraising efforts by the Managing Director, Chief Revenue Officer, and other senior and executive staff by actively participating in developing outreach and cultivation strategies:
    • Overseeing prospect research and prospect pipelines for new and existing initiatives; 
    • Creating or supervising the creation of prospect research profiles, meeting briefs, and talking points; and 
    • Participating in donor and prospect meetings as appropriate. 
 

ABOUT YOU 

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. 
  • 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in development and institutional giving, preferably in the fields of arts and culture, human rights, or public media. 
  • Experience writing grants and reports, including those for new programs and initiatives, with a proven track record of success; experience with public funding processes and 6-figure gifts is a plus. 
  • Excellent spoken and written communicator with extraordinary attention to detail, time management skills, and critical thinking abilities.  
  • Experienced in working with Finance and Program teams to develop budgets and budget narratives accompanying grant proposals and reports. 
  • The ability to organize, expedite, problem-solve, and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, working within and across diverse groups and teams. 
  • Solid prospect research experience and familiarity with online research tools. 
  • Proficiency with donor CRMs: experience with Salesforce is a big plus. 
  • Flexible, collaborative, and passionate about StoryCorps’ mission.

Physical Requirements:

  • Travel up to 15%.
  • Must have the ability to be in NYC or other locations for in-person meetings with donors as needed.
