We're looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented engineer with a controls or industrial automation background who is excited about robotics. As an Associate Quality Engineer: Controls, you will apply your knowledge of PLCs, industrial communication protocols, and hardware integration to validate and test Standard Bots' robot systems in real-world automation environments.
This role bridges the gap between traditional controls engineering and quality assurance. Ideal for someone who understands how industrial equipment communicates and wants to ensure our robots integrate seamlessly into customer automation cells.
ResponsibilitiesDesign and execute test plans for robot integration with PLCs, HMIs, and other industrial control systems
Validate communication protocols including Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, Ethercat and digital/analog I/O interfaces
Build and maintain test fixtures for automated hardware testing, including basic AC & DC wiring, sensor integration, and signal verification
Test robot behavior in simulated and real customer environments involving conveyors, grippers, vision systems, and safety interlocks
Validate safety system integration (e-stops, safety PLCs, light curtains) to ensure compliance with industrial safety standards
Collaborate with applications engineering and field teams to reproduce customer-reported integration issues
Document test procedures, create wiring diagrams, and maintain test cell configurations
Review feature specifications for industrial usability and protocol compliance
Build and wire PLC cabinets and other test control systems to support automated test frameworks
Develop and maintain documentation for test setups, wiring diagrams, and fixtures to ensure reproducibility
Interpret and work from wiring schematics, diagrams, and technical drawings to build reliable test equipment
Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs
Who You Are
We're looking for engineers who are self-driven, optimistic, creative, and resourceful. You have a foundation in controls or industrial automation and want to apply it in a fast-paced robotics environment
Skills You'll Bring
Technical Foundation: 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or a related field (or equivalent educational background in electrical/controls engineering, mechatronics, or automation technology).
Industrial Protocols: Working knowledge of PLC programming and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, & PROFINET
Electrical Fundamentals: Comfortable with basic DC wiring, reading electrical schematics, signal types (24V digital I/O, 4–20mA analog), and using test equipment (multimeters, etc)
Hardware Integration: Experience interfacing control systems with sensors, actuators, or robotic systems. Familiarity with relay logic, safety circuits, and motor drives is a plus.
CAD Proficiency: Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software for designing test fixtures, enclosures, and mounting hardware.
Growth + Optimism: You are excited by new domains and challenges, and eager to pick up new context to accelerate your impact.
Clarity of Communication: You excel in written and verbal communication and enjoy leveraging your skills to support your peers.
Impact Driven: You relentlessly seek user impact and value execution over technical idealism. ****You prioritize simplicity, reliability, velocity and proactively identify opportunities to improve systems.
Experience with robotic systems (6-axis, SCARA, or collaborative robots)
Familiarity with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLC platforms
Basic scripting ability (Python, structured text) for test automation
Basic understanding of industrial safety standards (ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA 15.06)
The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience.
