Position Overview

This Community Editor role will build and nurture the Atlas Obscura community through engaging newsletters, social media, and other audience initiatives. This role involves working as part of a team to deliver content, analyze performance data, and implement strategies to grow our audience and deepen engagement. The Community Editor will be instrumental in ensuring our content reaches the right readers at the right time and fostering a strong connection with our community.

Please note there will be several community editors at Atlas Obscura. As we lean into community as the centerpiece of our strategy, we are creating a world-class team of community editors to chart the course and interact with our audiences and contributors.

Key Responsibilities

Newsletter Management

  • Build, deploy, and analyze performance of Atlas Obscura's newsletters using Klaviyo.
  • Develop and implement newsletter strategies to increase user growth and retention.
  • Analyze newsletter analytics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Use A/B testing and subject line experiments to generate audience insights.
  • Work with marketing to integrate branded content and optimize revenue per send.
  • Create and maintain best practices for audience retention and acquisition, including welcome/onboarding flow, personalization, automation, list hygiene, and more
  • Maintain the newsletter content calendar across multiple newsletters, editorial and custom content.

Social Media Campaigns

  • Execute social media campaigns as designated by the social media strategist.
  • Monitor social media metrics and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Engage with the Atlas Obscura community on social media platforms.
  • Monitor community feedback where necessary and respond appropriately.

Internal Operations

  • Work with teams, including tech and product, to test and implement new tools and systems where they intersect with your responsibilities. 
  • Contribute to developing workflows and processes for community and content operations.
  • Help foster  a culture of curiosity and community-first thinking.

Analytics and Reporting

  • Analyze newsletter and social media analytics to track performance.
  • Prepare regular reports on audience growth and engagement metrics and present actionable insights to the wider team.
  • Use data to inform decision-making and optimize strategies based on the company’s KPIs..

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 2 years managing newsletter products in digital media or related fields.
  • Strong written communication and copywriting skills.
  • Experience with email clients like Klaviyo or a similar email service provider.
  • Enthusiasm to learn Klaviyo’s capabilities with an eye toward certification.
  • Experience using data to inform decision making.
  • Entrepreneurial instincts, a hands-on attitude, a healthy sense of humor, and a passion for Atlas Obscura’s mission of finding and reporting on the world’s most wondrous and hidden places
  • Understanding of branded content campaign performance needs.

Bonus Skills

  • Experience at a travel publication or with travel content.
  • Experience optimizing for SEO.
  • Experience using photo editing tools.
  • Experience in scheduling social media posts.

Pay: $55k-$75k depending on experience
