BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading tech-powered, diversified media company that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally through its cross-platform news and entertainment network. The company produces articles, lists, quizzes, videos, and original series; lifestyle content through brands including Tasty, the world’s largest social food network; original reporting and investigative journalism through BuzzFeed News and HuffPost; an industry-leading affiliate business, strategic partnerships, licensing and product development through BuzzFeed Commerce; and original productions across broadcast, cable, SVOD, film and digital platforms for BuzzFeed Studios.

The Role

BuzzFeed News and HuffPost, two Pulitzer Prize winning newsrooms, are each hiring a journalist who has recently left Afghanistan for a one-year reporting fellowship.

The journalist should write about their subject matter expertise; you do not need to specifically report on the Afghan crisis, but that is certainly open. You should be someone who wants to produce scoops, features, social news, or other out-of-the-box reporting.

Ideally, you will be based where our company has full-time employees — the US, Canada, Mexico, India, Australia, Japan, or the UK.

For US applications please refer to this link.

The fellowship aims to empower these journalists to continue working in their chosen field and get editorial guidance, build their body of work, and advance their careers.

BuzzFeed News is a reporter-driven newsroom. You will steer the conversation around the issues you write about. BuzzFeed News has teams that focus on politics, science, technology, breaking news, culture, social news, investigations, and systemic inequalities. You can think of those teams as a guide to understand how our newsroom is structured and what we value, but don’t worry about your pitches fitting neatly into one of those categories — send us your best ideas.

At HuffPost, we report with empathy and take a people-first approach in everything we report. We cover real stories about real life. Fellows may join our breaking news, trends or video teams. Jump into our politics, culture, justice or environmental reporting. Help amplify our exploration of race and identity in our Voices section, or serve our audience news they can use in our Life pages. We’re open to any and all ideas.

You Will

You will work closely with your editors to tell compelling stories that connect to our audiences. We don't have a preset idea of which teams you'll work with, but we will help you rigorously button up your work so that it is unassailable

You Have

  • A few years experience in journalism, with a record of working on breaking news, enterprise coverage, investigative reporting, first-person essays and columns, video or feature writing.
  • A demonstrated ability to tell stories in ways that reach the widest possible audience.
  • The desire to be a willing and generous collaborator.

To Apply

Please include a brief pitch letter — two pages max — of what you would like to report on, and how you’d go about doing so, as well as a resume or a brief writeup of your work experience. If you have access to your past work that you’d like to share, please do. If you think you’d be a better fit at one newsroom over the other, feel free to explain why. Leadership from BuzzFeed News and HuffPost will be evaluating all applications and ultimately deciding on the two finalists and where (which newsroom, and which desk) they will be placed.

Please note: Salary for this role is competitive with full-time reporter roles at BuzzFeed News and HuffPost.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
