BuzzFeed & HuffPost

BuzzFeed is the world's leading independent digital media and tech company, with a cross-platform news and entertainment network that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally and spreads Joy and Truth across the internet.

Our portfolio of brands are household names that people rely on to inform and entertain, including: BuzzFeed, BuzzFeed News, Tasty, Nifty, Bring Me, Cocoa Butter, Pero Like, Worth It, and Unsolved, to name a few. These properties and their Creators reach over 134M people a month through articles, lists, videos, animations, quizzes, podcasts, original series, newsletters and more.

On Nov. 19, 2020, BuzzFeed announced that it was acquiring HuffPost. HuffPost is a premium destination for award-winning journalism, and was the first fully digital U.S. publication to win the Pulitzer prize — a testament to editorial excellence. With this acquisition, BuzzFeed's scale, engagement and cultural impact will be unrivaled. BuzzFeed News and HuffPost will operate as separate, distinct news organizations.

The Role

HuffPost seeks a visionary editor to relaunch our opinion section.

The Opinion Editor will shape the section’s identity: What are the urgent issues our readers care about? What perspectives do we seek out? How will HuffPost stand out in a crowded space? These are some of the strategic directions you’ll work out alongside the Editor in Chief and other editorial leads.

We are also looking for someone to make an immediate impact, working with staff writers, freelancers and newsmakers to publish daily op-eds and columns that speak directly and passionately to the newscycle and public interest. You should be comfortable making smart, nimble decisions in a fast-paced news environment while keeping long-term goals in mind.

The Opinion Editor will also contribute to the section under their own byline, so we are seeking an established thought leader with impressive clips and a robust following.

You Will

Assign and edit commentary on a daily basis, anticipating urgent debates and reacting creatively to breaking news our readers care about. You will be expected to turn around copy quickly and precisely, write headlines that grab attention, sharpen arguments, smooth prose, bolster opinions with facts and jettison compulsory throat clearing. As the only editor on a new desk, you’ll often be the first and last set of eyes on a pitch, so you should have impeccable judgement, knowing when to heat up a conversation and when to cool it down.

You will also be a diplomat and leader inside the newsroom, working to distinguish the opinion desk from news gathering, but collaborating when appropriate to fully own a newscycle.

You Have

At least 5 years experience in the opinion space, as a writer, columnist or editor with a history of expanding media access to underrepresented voices and points of view. You should also have a track record of publishing commentary that redefined a debate, shifted public opinion or influenced policy. HuffPost puts people first, so you should have a passion for working with nonprofessional writers and nurturing emerging talent. Mastery of the art of the rewrite will be key in this role.

Previous experience in management is a plus but not required. You should be comfortable working with analytics and audience tools to guide your work with data and direct reader feedback.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
