The Role:

If you have a keen eye for spotting grammar mistakes, strong opinions about the Oxford comma, and a passion for delivering factual content to students of all ages, then Newsela’s editorial team could be a good fit for you. As a Senior Copy Editor, you will be responsible for helping to manage and maintain copy editing style for one of the most promising learning products in the K-12 education space. This position is first and foremost for an experienced copy editor, though you are also a manager of projects, manager of copy editing freelancers, and other written content on Newsela’s platform. Your goal is to elevate Newsela’s world-class news, science, ELA, and social studies content for K-12 classrooms across the U.S. We value authentic content that creates opportunities for teachers to be culturally responsive, encourages students to think critically, and explains complex concepts with ease.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

This role allows you to help shape and maintain Newsela’s copy editing style so that it adheres to AP style and supports student understanding with accurate facts. You’ll brainstorm with other senior leaders on our Content team around initiatives that can help enable our written content to be in tip top shape and ensure our freelance copy editors support that goal. Your work will directly contribute to ensuring educators are equipped with the content and tools necessary to deliver representative, culturally responsive instruction, and in turn help deepen the impact of our mission to make reading accessible and engaging for all learners.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 8+ years of demonstrated copy editing experience focused on news, science and/or web content in a fast-paced environment. You may also have a writing or editing specialization or may be a jack of all trades. Either way, your passion for learning and education will help us transform our already enormous archive of content to be more accurate, grammatically and stylistically correct, and more inclusive. While not a requirement to have previous K-12 education experience, you understand the education landscape enough to be able apply your copy editing experience to it. You leverage your attention to detail and copy editing judgement to deliver thoughtful, well-balanced content that serves the needs of K-12 students. Your interpersonal skills are unmatched and you can discuss and debate copyedit decisions with ease, helping us make thoughtful and clear judgment calls.
