The Role

BuzzFeed News is looking for a Video Journalist to join our News Curation team in Los Angeles or New York City, which is the team responsible for packaging and promoting our journalism across all platforms, including social media. You will focus on finding and editing short-form (~3-minute) content for Facebook and Instagram that has news value and reflects the interests of the BuzzFeed News audience on those platforms. You will have an eye for captivating footage that appeals to a wide audience and experience structuring videos to keep our audience engaged while telling a story. They should also be creative, with a passion for news and excellent communication skills.

The Video Journalist will work alongside the News Curation team to learn how to package videos for social media — from creating effective headlines and captions to understanding how to move video on different platforms. You should be self-motivated, curious, with some experience in news video or social media. 

 This is a one-year, fixed-term position with the option of potentially renegotiating the contract at the end.

You Will 

  • Produce 2+ videos a week
  • Harvest user generated content from social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit and YouTube
  • Secure and track content permission
  • Interview sources for videos
  • Editing UGC footage, interviews, and additional components (i.e voiceover and scripts) into cohesive stories
  • Work with the News Curation team to prioritize time-sensitive projects so they are optimized for success
  • Quickly iterate off of successful/trending content
  • Identify content that represents marginalized voices and communities

You Have

  • Proficiency using Adobe Premiere Pro 
  • An ability to edit interviews, use key framing and keyboard shortcuts
  • A familiarity with video requirements for various platforms
  • An ability to identify engaging content on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Experience working in After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop (experience creating thumbnails in Photoshop is a must).
  • Great communication skills and ability to give and receive critical feedback in a small team environment
  • Experience working in a meticulous, technical, organized, and creative manner
  • Ability to work independently and under close direction
  • Experience in deadline-driven environment and internet video
