InterPayments is a San Francisco, CA-based, FinTech SaaS company sitting at the exciting intersection of payments and data intelligence. Our Mission is to empower merchants and the software vendors they use to lower payment processing costs. We create innovative data services that Fortune 1000 companies rely upon to lower fees by putting payments in competition on every swipe.

We empower dedicated team-first individuals who are driven to solve problems to foster innovation, perform at their highest potential, and make a meaningful impact - while creating meaningful relationships along the way.

About the Role

The Controller is a key member of the management team and owns InterPayments' accounting and financial operations end to end: the books, the close, audit, and the controls behind them. This role also leads our use of AI in finance, so that a high volume of recurring-revenue, partner, and commission transactions is processed accurately, on time, and with less manual effort every quarter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accounting and reporting. Oversee all operational and reporting accounting. Maintain the general ledger and the Company’s books and records.
  • Close. Own the monthly close and consolidation, including account reconciliations. Deliver against a defined close calendar and keep it moving earlier over time.
  • Invoicing, AR, and AP. Oversee invoicing, AR, and AP. Keep invoices out on schedule and aged payables under control.
  • Partner rev share and commissions. Own partner revenue share calculations and payouts, and the review and audit of sales commissions and MBO payouts. Work with HR on variable and year-end compensation.
  • Controls and compliance. Design, implement, and monitor financial processes, policies, and controls that keep the Company audit-ready and compliant.
  • Audit. Serve as the primary contact for the external audit firm and complete the annual audit on time.
  • Planning. Partner with management on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Cross-functional workflow. Work with Sales, Professional Services, and Legal to keep order-to-cash handoffs clean, including contract terms, subscription start dates, and invoice timing.
  • Systems. Lead systems implementation, adoption, and continuous improvement across accounting (QuickBooks Online, Salesforce, Ramp, Gusto, and related tools).

AI in Finance

We expect the Controller to use AI as a standard part of how the finance function works, not as a side project. Within the first year you will:

  • Automate the routine. Identify and automate repetitive workflows such as reconciliations, journal entry preparation, accrual support, invoice and bill coding, and rev share and commission workpapers.
  • Add a control layer. Use AI to review transactions and payout data, flag anomalies and mismatches before close, and reduce rework and audit findings.
  • Speed up reporting. Use AI to draft variance commentary, flux analyses, board and investor finance summaries, and audit support schedules, with human review before anything is issued.
  • Govern it. Set clear guardrails for AI use in finance: data privacy and confidentiality, review and sign-off requirements, documentation for auditors, and approved tools.
  • Build capability. Train the finance team and partner teams to use AI well, and track the hours saved and accuracy gained.

Experience and Education

  • 10+ years of relevant accounting experience.
  • 3+ years as Controller, or equivalent experience as an Assistant Controller at a medium to large enterprise.
  • Significant experience managing accounting for high-transaction-volume, recurring-revenue businesses, ideally SaaS or fintech.
  • Proven track record running an efficient close and using systems to automate and remove manual processes.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI tools to accounting or finance work, or a demonstrated ability to learn and adopt them quickly.
  • Strong QuickBooks and Excel skills. Experience with Salesforce, Ramp, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and comfort working across teams.
  • CPA, public accounting, and FP&A experience preferred but not required.
