Who Are We Looking For?
The Engineering team is looking for a Data Engineer who can confidently contribute across our reporting and data stack and is ready to take on increasing ownership over time. You will work closely with senior engineers, but you will also drive your own projects, contribute to technical decisions, and help improve our data platform.

You are a great fit for our team if you:

  • Have solid hands-on experience with data engineering patterns and tools
  • Can balance detail-oriented implementation work with an eye toward long-term scalability and maintainability
  • Care deeply about the quality, reliability, and impact of the systems you build

You will collaborate with more senior engineers on architecture and design, but you should be comfortable proposing solutions, estimating work, and seeing projects through from design to production.
What Will You Be Doing?

You may:

  • Design, build, and maintain reliable data pipelines and workflows that support reporting and analytics use cases
  • Work with large, complex data sets to meet business requirements, improve data quality, and ensure data is accurate and timely
  • Develop and optimize infrastructure for extracting, loading, and transforming data from a variety of sources
  • Build and enhance analytics tools and data models that power reporting and provide actionable insights into key business metrics
  • Collaborate with stakeholders on the Product, Operations, and Executive teams to understand their data needs and deliver solutions that meet those needs
  • Support production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, and continuous improvement of performance and reliability
  • Contribute to team practices, including code reviews, documentation, and occasionally helping more junior teammates

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a closely related data-focused engineering role
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases
  • Hands-on experience building and optimizing cloud data pipelines (ETL/ELT)
  • Experience building processes that support data transformation, data modeling, metadata management, and dependency/workload management
  • Experience with AWS cloud services such as EMR, S3, Glue, SES, SNS/SQS, or EC2 (or similar services on another cloud provider) is preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with unstructured or semi-structured data
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable data stores
  • Experience working with and supporting cross-functional teams
  • Python programming experience, especially in data engineering contexts
  • Experience with Snowflake or another modern cloud data warehouse
  • Experience with ETL/ELT and data transformation tools such as Fivetran, dbt, etc.
  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Sigma, Tableau, Metabase, Looker, etc.
  • A Computer Science or related technical degree, or equivalent practical experience

This role will be based in either the Austin office, and will be part of Vestwell's hybrid in-office operation.

The expected base salary range for this position is $115K - $130K base. This position is eligible to participate in the Company Bonus Pool and is eligible to receive new hire equity in the Company. Please note that salary bands are based on NY and other similar metro areas and may differ based on where the role is ultimately hired.

We value health and wellness at Vestwell and in addition to a dedicated Employee Wellbeing Committee, we offer competitive health coverage and generous vacation offering. We have adopted a hybrid office policy, but all employees are welcome at our bright, comfortable office with many workspace options in our Midtown Manhattan, Austin, King of Prussia, and Phoenix offices, so everyone has a setting that is the most productive for them. OUR PROCESS
It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1-2 conversations about Vestwell, your experience, and your interests. Next steps can vary by role, but the usual next steps are a skill or experience screen (e.g. a coding interview for an Engineer, a portfolio review for a Designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in-person interview panel after that if the screens go well. Before making an offer, our interview process concludes with a references check stage for your recruiter to meet with a current or former supervisor and peer. We prioritize transparency and lack of surprise throughout the process.
