As the Director of Business Intelligence in the Business Operations organization, you are responsible for the development, implementation, and optimization of the overall BI/Analytics ecosystem to enable the business to be successful in a high-growth environment. You will oversee the overall architecture, design, development and maintenance of reporting solutions and related business intelligence services. You’ll work closely with stakeholders at all levels to identify and prioritize ongoing technology and process improvements as well as supporting programs/projects, needs assessments, investment plans, and business cases.

Manage BI/Analytics data stack

  • Create a single source of truth for data and reporting via modeling layer (i.e., Dataform or dbt), data warehouse (BigQuery) and Looker.
  • Manage ETL/ingest layer (Fivetran, in-house) to ensure accurate, timely, and comprehensive data ingest.
  • Ingest new data sources from product and business applications (e.g., Salesforce, Intercom, etc.), partnering with Engineering for custom ETL when needed. Create clean, intuitive org-facing data tables via SQL transformation in modeling layer. Manage/review SQL written by direct reports.
  • Manage BigQuery as central data warehouse.
  • Create intuitive, accessible Looker environments for key user groups (sales, customer success, executives, etc.)
  • Evaluate and, if needed, roll out “outbound” data platform (e.g., Census) to push actionable data from BI warehouse to business-facing and user-facing environments. 

Partner across Bluecore to raise the analytics bar

  • Partner with department leads to create key metrics and set goals.
  • Build reporting/analysis for real-time management at the strategic/executive level and at the operational/manager level.
  • Document data and metric definitions (e.g. Gitlab’s KPI Index)
  • Train & enable staff across Bluecore to self-serve in Looker (i.e., create Looks & Dashboards from Explores) and grow “embedded” analytics model. 
  • Partner with teams to ensure accurate, comprehensive data capture across Product, Ops, Sales, CS, etc. 
  • Prioritize data team bandwidth to focus on highest-leverage projects to drive business value, including managing inbound queue. 
  • Create, maintain and communicate team road map. 
  • Build and grow a high-performing data team, scaling technical skills and analytics know-how.

Drive automation & integrations for growth

  • Lead outbound data initiatives for growth, using data warehouse (BigQuery) to push data into business applications (e.g., Salesforce) and user-facing platforms (e.g., Intercom) to drive goals. 
  • Support data automation for growth & retention initiatives by defining key audiences, user segmentation, automation triggers, etc.
  • Implement outbound alerts to business stakeholders based on changes in critical data; e.g., usage declines, heightened churn risk, etc. 
  • Support user-facing data initiatives via modeled data and enabling access by Engineering/Product.

About you

  • 7-10 years experience managing business data infrastructure.
  • Experience working in dynamic, high-growth startup environments.
  • Comfortable with team dynamics and openly seeks and shares information across departments, coordinating and combining competencies for the best overall result.
  • Excels in verbal and written communication; leads and inspires the team via open communication, effective listening, and strong collaborative networks; has excellent negotiation skills and has an ability to orchestrate change through influence.
  • Identifies bottlenecks and pain points and directs resources to address the challenges in a directed, methodical, cost-effective, and data-driven manner; leverages analytical experience to build a road map to meet the needs of the stakeholders.
  • Works effectively in the face of stress, ambiguity, difficult situations, and shifting priorities all while championing the long-term architectural view; understands the need to shift focus and priorities as required and successfully leads others through periods of change.
