We have built a new Engineering team that will focus on both Data Engineering and Data Science initiatives, and we’re seeking an experienced leader to build and scale this team to prominence. Reporting to the CTO, you will have the opportunity to grow and shape what this division becomes as well as impact the entire technology organization. This role is expected to define the strategy for Data technology for the future of Bread as well as build and scale an organization.

To be successful in this role you must have the right combination of strategy, leadership, and operational skills to lead a team of engineering managers and engineers to deliver on these objectives. You will be expected to not just execute a plan, but to determine the appropriate strategy and approach to build a world-class data technology team and platform. You will also be a strong partner for Product and work in tandem to steer the overall Data organization into the future.

Your role at Bread:

• Define and evolve our technology strategy for data engineering and data science.
• Architect our long term approach on how to properly leverage big data and machine learning into our product roadmap
• Lead the efforts in areas such as developing a customer data platform, creating a scalable approach for integrating data with platform customers and building machine learning models for multiple scenarios, as well as many other initiatives you will help define.
• Partner with Product to inform and influence the roadmap and ensure our technology is moving forwards to support our vision.
• Work closely with leaders in Engineering and Product Management as well as other departments to align on strategy and ensure we are moving forward together
• Recruit, train and mentor a team of data scientists and data engineers
• Be and active part of the technology leadership group and be a voice for data technology in the organization

Requirements:

• You are currently, or have been in, a senior engineering leadership role with a history of delivering reliable products running at scale
• You have managed and led data engineers and data scientists
• Experience working with and/or building customer data platforms
• Experience with large-scale cloud infrastructure
• Working knowledge of data technologies including Snowflake, Spark, Hadoop, Jupyter, Airflow, Kafka, etc.
• Expertise in building machine learning algorithms directly or mentoring advanced level Data Scientists
• A Master’s degree in a STEM discipline
• Experienced leadership in transforming, building and excelling engineering teams.
• Proven communication, personnel management and coaching skills.
• Experience in working with all levels of management, including Senior Executives and consulting with key business stakeholders

Engineers at Bread also get the opportunity to participate in “20%” time through Working Groups!  Working Groups are quarterly teams of 4 to 6 engineers who set out to tackle a specific engineering initiative outside of their core engineering team.  Working Groups have included ones for Logging Architecture, Internal Authentication, Community & Blogs, Testing Infrastructure, and Monitoring. Groups meet every Friday to plan and own their roadmap and implement their features. All engineers get a chance to be in one of these groups and over time potentially lead a group for that quarter.
