The Role:

The Product Designer will be responsible for crafting user-centric solutions for Newsela’s platform (across mobile, desktop, and tablet). As part of a highly collaborative, cross-functional team, your day to day will involve working closely with product managers, researchers, data analysts, and engineers at each step of the process to find the right problems to tackle, explore ideas for how to solve it and then refine it into a coherent solution and design strategy. You’ll play an active role in shaping your product team’s roadmap by understanding and advocating for the needs of our users (whether they be teachers, school district leadership, or a 6-year-old student).

Why You’ll Love This Role:

You’ll be joining a team of passionate designers at the forefront of building products that shape the future of K-12 education. This is also an opportunity to help develop and contribute to Newsela’s design standards, which will ultimately be applied to products that reach over 20 million users nationwide. In addition to helping build Newsela’s product, you’ll have continuous chances to see your solutions in action, being used by teachers and students in classrooms. You’ll get to witness firsthand the impact your work has on helping to make reading more accessible and engaging for students.

Why We’ll Love You:

You are currently, or are working towards becoming, a full-stack designer. Your skill sets span from user research and testing to wireframes and user-flows to high fidelity and prototyping. You are curious, data-informed and unsatisfied with “good enough.” You are energized by solving complex problems and approach design holistically; users are at the center of your process and that is evident in your approach and solutions. You love designing flexible components and approach every design challenge from a user-driven perspective. You skillfully balance multiple projects to deliver materials on time and within scope, and know how to source input for stakeholders across the company to align with business goals and overall brand guidelines. You also have experience using Sketch, FIgma, Invision, Zeplin, Illustrator, Principle, and other design applications.

About Newsela:

One of the fastest growing tech companies in K-12 education, Newsela was founded on the principle that while every child learns differently, they all deserve a rich learning experience that ignites a love of learning. We built our platform based on learning science research to deliver the most engaging, authentic content to modernize how teaching happens in the classroom. Along with interactive assessments and tools, we provide teachers with digital content at five reading levels -- from +100 of the best sources -- that is relevant to the diverse backgrounds and interests of their students. Since we started in 2013, we’ve become an essential solution for 90% of U.S. K-12 schools and serve +25 million users.
