What you'll be doing

CIBC Capital Markets is seeking a seasoned communications leader to support the firm’s growing US Capital Markets platform, and our important Global Corporate and Investment Banking team. This role will be responsible for shaping and executing external communications strategies that strengthen CIBC’s profile in the US market, protect and enhance the firm’s reputation, and support senior leadership through complex, fast-moving environments.

Reporting into Corporate Communications and working in close partnership with teams across Capital Markets and the CIBC enterprise, this role will serve as a senior, trusted advisor to Global Corporate and Investment Banking and US Capital Markets leadership. This role will provide strategic counsel, hands-on execution, and real-time decision support across media relations, internal communications, issues management, and thought leadership.

This is a highly visible, high-impact role suited to a communications professional who combines strong judgment, deep capital markets fluency, and the confidence to operate alongside senior executives.

How you'll succeed

External Communications & Media Relations

  • Lead the development and execution of external communications strategies in support of US Capital Markets priorities and initiatives, aligned with enterprise-wide objectives

  • Provide media relations support to Global Corporate and Investment Banking leaders in Canada and the US, and identify key media opportunities to highlight the business’ profile

  • Draft and oversee press releases, media statements, backgrounders, Q&As, and other external materials related to capital markets activity

  • Manage proactive and reactive media relations, including responding to media inquiries and pitching capital markets-related stories

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key financial, business, and policy journalists across US media outlets, and Corporate and Investment Banking beat reporters

Executive & Leadership Support

  • Prepare and brief senior executives and subject matter experts for media interviews, public commentary, and speaking engagements

  • Develop and draft internal employee messages on behalf of US Capital Markets and Global Corporate and Investment Banking senior leaders

  • Prepare internal remarks, scripting, and presentations for leaders when required

  • Provide senior-level counsel to US Capital Markets leadership and Global Corporate and Investment Banking leaders on reputational risk, stakeholder positioning, and communication engagement strategies – both internal and external

  • Act as a strategic communications partner to Capital Markets leadership and cross-functional stakeholders across the enterprise

Issues Management & Crisis Response

  • Lead public affairs responses for US Capital Markets and Global Corporate and Investment Banking issues, including market volatility, enforcement actions, or sector-wide events, in close coordination with – and under the guidance of – the Senior Director and other bank-wide media relations leaders

  • Develop scenario plans, holding statements, and response frameworks for potential capital markets-related issues

  • Provide real-time counsel during fast-moving situations requiring rapid coordination, sound judgment, and clear decision-making

Thought Leadership & Strategic Positioning

  • Identify and advance opportunities for proactive thought leadership related to capital markets, market structure, and the broader financial system

  • Support the development of executive op-eds, speeches, and other external-facing content that reinforces CIBC’s expertise and perspective in the US market, and in the Global Corporate and Investment Banking space

Who you are

  • You have extensive experience (10+ years) in corporate communications, public affairs, journalism, or media relations, ideally within financial services, capital markets, government, or a highly regulated environment.

  • You possess strong understanding of US capital markets, investment banking, financial institutions, and the media landscape would be ideal.

  • You demonstrate experience advising senior executives and operating effectively in high-stakes, time-sensitive situations.

  • You portray Eexceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

  • You make sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to navigate complex reputational and stakeholder dynamics

  • You have a collaborative mindset and the confidence to operate as a senior partner across functions and geographies

The role supports the firm’s growth ambitions while ensuring thoughtful, disciplined engagement with media and stakeholders. The successful candidate will help position CIBC as a credible, trusted voice in the US capital markets space and will be a key advisor to leadership during both opportunities and challenges.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $180,000 - $250,000K for the New York, NY market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
